YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio –
Matthew Crow broke his own school record in the 60-meter hurdles to lead the Slippery Rock University men's track & field team to 15 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and four NCAA provisional marks at the YSU Icebreaker Friday at Youngstown State University.
Â
Crow took fifth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles behind four NCAA Division I athletes with a time of 8.09 seconds. That effort tops his own SRU record of 8.11 seconds that was set last winter and is well under the NCAA provisional standard of 8.17 seconds.
Â
Crow's effort was one of four NCAA marks for The Rock men Friday with the other three all coming in the field.
Â
Seaton Wozniak and
Joshua Gose each hit the NCAA standard in the shot put to sweep the top two places in the elite section of the event. Wozniak won with a throw of 16.85 meters with Gose taking second at 16.54 meters. SRU also got a third PSAC mark in the shot put from
Logan Parker, who was second in the unseeded section of the event with a toss of 15.26 meters.
Â
Drew Layton rounded out the NCAA marks with a third place finish and a clearance of 5.00 meters in the pole vault to lead three Rock vaulters to top 10 finishes.
Logan Gossard and
Andy Huynh tied for eighth with PSAC marks of 4.65 meters.
Â
Zach Gose joined Wozniak in picking up a win in the throws as The Rock swept the two "elite" throwing events Friday. Gose won the weight throw by a wide margin with a PSAC qualifying mark of 17.08 meters.
Joshua Rohland was fourth with a PSAC effort of 15.24 meters.
Â
SRU picked up a runner-up finish in the triple jump with
Ian James posting a leap of 13.85 meters to hit the PSAC standard.
Â
The Rock had four men come in under the PSAC mark in the 200-meter dash with
AJ Virata leading the way in eighth place in 22.20 seconds.
Jacob Thompson was 12th in 22.38 seconds, followed by
Tyler Morosky and
Kyle Rauchut in 13th and 14th with matching times of 22.41 seconds. Rauchut and Thompson then closed the meet by teaming with
Kadin Johnson and
Micah Good to take second in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:18.55.
Â
Virata rounded out the PSAC qualifying marks with a 14th place showing the 60-meter dash in 7.01 seconds.
Â
Friday's meet marked the lone competition this calendar year for SRU, which will break now for the finals and the holidays before returning to action Jan. 25 at Ashland University. SRU was slated to have four athletes compete this weekend at a multi-event meet at Edinboro, but that competition was canceled due to winter storms.
