LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock split a pair of PSAC crossover road games Dec. 6-7, picking up a 64-57 win at Kutztown University before falling to Bloomsburg University the next day, 64-48. Thanks to double-doubles from Gillin and
Kayley Joseph-Bernard, Slippery Rock earned a seven-point win over the Golden Bears after holding off a late Kutztown charge.
Â
SRU held a 13-point lead with 6:13 left in the fourth quarter but Kutztown cut the lead to just five points with 40 seconds remaining. 12 of SRU's final 14 points came at the foul line to keep Kutztown at bay. Gillin led offensively with 15 points to go with 10 rebounds, while Joseph-Bernard parlayed 14 points and 13 rebounds together.
Â
Slippery Rock entered halftime at Bloomsburg with a 27-26 lead after overcoming an early 13-4 deficit, but the Huskies lunged ahead swiftly in the second half with a 14-0 run that kept The Rock from catching them.
Regan Atkins and
Mairan Haggerty both scored a team-leading 15 points for SRU, while Joseph-Bernard added seven rebounds for The Rock.
Â
LEADING THE ROCK
11.7 points per game from Atkins paves the way for The Rock on offense through nine games this season.
Tahmala Thorpe (10.2 PPG) and
Sophia Hook (10.1 PPG) all join Atkins above the double-digit threshold.
Â
Joseph-Bernard has contributed 8.1 points per contest with 7.1 points per game coming from Haggerty. Gillin (6.9) and
Brooklyn Jones (6.4) both score more than half a dozen points per game, while
Rebecca Goetz's 4.0 points per game round out the top eight scorers for SRU.
Â
Goetz continues to lead Slippery Rock in shot accuracy, making two-third of her total field goal attempts this season (16-of-24). Joseph-Bernard is one of SRU's best high-volume shooters, converting 47.7 percent from the floor (31-of-65).
Â
Jones has earned that same reputation but from 3-point distance, knocking down a team-best 44.0 percent of her 3-point attempts (11-of-25). Atkins is just behind her at 34.6 percent (9-of-26).
Â
Joseph-Bernard pulls in an SRU-leading 9.3 rebounds per game, comprising almost a quarter of Slippery Rock's total rebounding this year (84-of-339, 24.8 percent). Joseph-Bernard has also dished out a team-best 4.6 assists per game while leading defensively with both 1.3 steals per game and 1.0 block per game.
Â
WHEN EAST MEETS WEST
Slippery Rock has historically fared well when playing PSAC East opponents, going 28-25 (.528) since the 2014-15 season. The Rock have split both of their PSAC crossover doubleheaders so far this year, now 2-2 in conference play.
Â
Tuesday's game will mark the final home game of the regular season against a PSAC East team. The Rock won their conference opener versus West Chester University, 69-56, Nov. 22 before taking Millersville University all the way to double overtime the next day at Morrow Field House, losing 62-59.
Â
The PSAC West has flexed a collective muscle early on against the PSAC East through the first few crossover contests this season. The Western Division squads have combined for a 23-7 (.767) record against their Eastern Division opponents this season. Four of the eight PSAC West teams have put up 4-0 record through their crossover slates as well.
Â
A DOUBLE DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Slippery Rock's 64-57 win at Kutztown University last week included a double-double from both Gillin (15 points, 10 rebounds) and Joseph-Bernard (14 points, 13 rebounds), marking the first time in 55 games that two SRU players have both produced double-doubles in the same game.
Â
Isabellah Middleton (24 points, 11 rebounds) and Kennedy Middleton (12 points, 10 rebounds) last achieved the feat for Slippery Rock in an 86-82 win over Fairmont State University early in the 2022 season.
Â
Gillin and Joseph-Bernard's double-doubles were also the first two double-doubles recorded by Slippery Rock players this season, as well as the first double-doubles generated by each player in their respective careers.
Â
SHARING THE ROCK
Slippery Rock ranks fifth in the PSAC with 15.2 assists per game, stacking up sixth conferencewide with an 0.86 assist/turnover ratio. The Rock have accumulated at least 17 assists in five of their nine games so far this season, including a season-high 23 against Glenville State University.
Â
Joseph-Bernard leads the way with 4.6 assists per game, good enough to rank second in the PSAC and 33
rd throughout the entirety of Division II. Her 1.32 assist/turnover ratio additionally lines up seventh in the conference. Thorpe has chipped in with 3.0 assists per game as well, which lands her 15
th in the PSAC.
Â
A RACE TO 500
Atkins is set to play her 35
th career game Tuesday, entering on 34 consecutive starts. If Atkins records 14 points and seven rebounds against the Mountaineers, she will become the fastest recorded SRU women's basketball player to reach 500 career points and 200 rebounds since Becky Siembak in the 2000-01 season.
Â
Coincidentally, Siembak was also the most recent SRU women's basketball player to be named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year until Atkins earned that honor last year after a historic rookie campaign.
Â
In terms of scoring alone, Lexi Carpenter became the fastest Rock women's basketball player to amass 500 career points in 2016. She reached that threshold in a non-conference contest against Fayetteville State University.
Â
A REBOUNDING DUO
Atkins and Joseph-Bernard have combined for 145 total rebounds, accounting for 42.8 percent of SRU's 339 total rebounds this year.
Â
Joseph-Bernard leads Slippery Rock with 9.3 rebounds per game, putting her fifth in the PSAC. Atkins joins her in the top 10 rebounders in the conference with 6.8 boards per game, 10
th in the PSAC.
Â
Both players also rank within the top eight in the PSAC in defensive rebounds per game. Joseph-Bernard has recorded 7.0 defensive boards per contest (fifth), while Atkins has brought down 4.9 rebounds per game (eighth).
Â
FROM THE PORTAL TO THE GLASS
Joseph-Bernard's 84 rebounds through nine games as a member of The Rock put her on pace to become one of the top rebounders by a transfer in their first year at Slippery Rock. Joseph-Bernard is just 55 rebounds from the top 10 all-time in this category, which is rounded out by Sherita Stanley's 139 rebounds in the 2010-11 season.
Â
Endya Robinson finished last season with 137 rebounds, ranking 11
th all-time at SRU for most rebounds by a transfer in their first season.
Â
MAIRAN IN THE STARTING FIVE
Haggerty made her first starts for SRU against both Kutztown and Bloomsburg, creating the second different unique starting lineup for The Rock this season. Through nine games this season, Haggerty is just the sixth different player to be penciled into the starting five for The Rock.
Â
SHOOTING FOR THREE
Slippery Rock's 32.6 3-point percentage ranks second in the PSAC, second only to Pitt-Johnston's 34.3 percent mark. The Rock's 6.7 made threes per game also rank fifth in the conference.
Â
Jones leads the way for The Rock percentagewise from the 3-point arc with a 44.0 percent rate from distance (11-of-25).
Â
SHOOTING FOR FREE
The Rock have been heating up from the foul line lately, shooting no worse than 78.6 percent in the last five games. SRU has made at least 81.0 percent of its free throws in four of its last five games including a season-best 87.5 percent clip from the charity stripe at Bloomsburg.
Â
Slippery Rock now ranks sixth in the conference, shooting 74.1 percent from the free throw line. That mark is also third in the PSAC West (Edinboro, .785 / Gannon, .778). Joseph-Bernard (11-of-12, .917), Haggerty (13-of-16, .813) and Thorpe (26-of-34, .765) all lead The Rock from the line among players taking at least 10 attempts.
Â
THE 10-GAME MARK
Entering Tuesday with a 4-5 overall record, a win over Mansfield would give Slippery Rock a .500 record through the first 10 games of the season. The Rock have made it through their first 10 contests with a .500 mark or better in seven of their last nine seasons, looking to reach that record for their eighth time in the last 10 seasons.
Â
STRIKING DISTANCE
While The Rock did not come away from Bloomsburg with the result they were looking for, the game – the team's ninth of the season – saw The Rock enter the fourth quarter with a double-digit deficit (10 points) for the first time this season.
Â
Prior to that game, SRU had not trailed by more than seven points through the opening 30 minutes of play this season.
Â
ROCK STARS OF RECENT
