LAST TIME OUT
The Rock saw their four-game undefeated streak come to an end at the hands of No. 4 Ashland University in a 1-0 loss at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Oct. 9. Despite earning a 22-4 lead in shots, the Eagles could only muster one goal against SRU, which came in the 57
th minute.
Â
Jaime Dermotta,
Maddie DeLucio,
Skylar Munnikhuysen and
Morgan Sarver tallied shots for The Rock, with Munnikhuysen's landing on target.
Leah Allman made seven saves in the contest, tying a career high.
Â
LEADING THE ROCK
Patrick remains at the top of Slippery Rock's statistics with 11 points on two goals and seven assists. Just two points behind her is
Bailey McGee with nine points on three goals and three assists. Sarver ranks third with eight points but is Slippery Rock's leading goalscorer with four.
Â
DeLucio has tallied six points on two goals and two assists, while three players have four points: both
Sophia Palermo and Yoder have scored once and assisted twice with
Libby Zacharyasz's four points stemming from a pair of goals.
Â
Ava Balazentis has earned two points from two assists, while
Faith Diffenbacher and Munnikhuysen each have two points on the year from one goal.
Kierstyn Maxey and
Sydney Smith round out the dozen players with at least one point with one assist each.
Â
On top of leading the team with four goals, Sarver has taken a team-high 27 shots and 11 shots on goal for The Rock. Patrick ranks second in shots on target with 10 despite only recording 13 total shot attempts, fifth on the team.
Â
Zacharyasz has registered 24 shots on the year with DeLucio (18) and Yoder (15) filling out the rest of the top five in total shot attempts. Sarver and Zacharyasz have combined for 51 shots through nine games, accounting for 31.7 percent of SRU's offensive efforts (51-of-161 shots).
Â
HANGING TOUGH WITH RANKED TEAMS
Slippery Rock has gone 1-1-1 in its last three games, with two of those contests coming against No. 5 Gannon University and No. 4 Ashland. The Rock played the fifth-ranked Golden Knights to a 1-1 draw Oct. 2 before limiting AU to just one goal in Oct. 9's 1-0 loss.
Â
Slippery Rock has now only recorded 19 losses over the past five years, but more importantly, has never lost in back-to-back games in that time. SRU has consistently rebounded well each time, going 13-0-5 (.861) in games following a loss since 2019.
Â
LEAPING LEAH IN NET
Allman lived up to her PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week honor from Oct. 7 by matching a career-high seven saves against the No. 4 Ashland Eagles while seeing 22 shots.
Â
The sophomore keeper ranks fourth in Division II with 900 minutes in net, not missing a second of Rock women's soccer action in her career. She will look for her third shutout in her fourth appearance against Seton Hill Saturday, entering with a 0.90 GAA and a save percentage of .820.
Â
STAUNCH DEFENSE
Diffenbacher, Smith, Zacharyasz,
Irene Doleno and
Nina King stood tall in Slippery Rock's defensive third against Ashland, as they have all season. The Rock have allowed just nine goals in their first 10 games, limiting opponents to 11.5 shots, 5.0 shots on goal and 3.6 corner kicks per game.
Â
In the team's last five games against unranked opponents, SRU's defense has limited the opposition to just 6.4 shots per game.
Â
STILL FINDING A GROOVE OFFENSIVELY
While The Rock were only able to create four shot opportunities against Ashland's second-ranked defense in Division II, Slippery Rock still ranks third in the PSAC with 5.8 points and fourth in the conference with 16.1 shots per game.
Â
Slippery Rock's offense has outscored its last five opponents by a cumulative difference of 14-2.
Â
The Rock have also outshot opponents in six of their 10 games this year, losing the battle in shots to now-nationally ranked Shepherd University, East Stroudsburg University, No. 5 Gannon and No. 4 Ashland.
Â
In the half dozen games that Slippery Rock has outshot its opponents, The Rock have averaged a 21.3 – 7.0 difference in total shot attempts.
Â
A HELPING HAND
Slippery Rock also still ranks second in the PSAC with 2.0 assists per game, a per-match average good enough to rank 16
th in Division II.
Â
That number is bolstered by Patrick, whose seven assists on the year account for 35 percent of the team's total (7-of-20). Patrick ranks second in the conference and seventh nationally with 0.7 assists per game. The team veteran from Greensburg, Pennsylvania became SRU's all-time leader in assists earlier this year with a career tally of 28.
Â
CLEAN PLAY
SRU has not forced the officials to blow the whistle much when The Rock are on the field, leading the PSAC West with just 6.5 fouls per game.
Â
Slippery Rock ranks second conference wide as a team, second only to Kutztown University's 6.2 fouls per game. The Rock's 6.5 fouls per contest is also good enough for 34
th in D-II.
Â
LAP #2 BEGINS NOW
Slippery Rock will begin its second portion of round-robin play within the PSAC West with Saturday's game at Seton Hill. At the halfway mark in conference competition, The Rock hold a 4-1-2 record, improved percentagewise from last year's 4-2-2 showing through the opening half of league action.
Â
BACK ON THE ROAD
The Rock do not have to travel much for the remainder of the season but will be playing their first away game since Sept. 28. Slippery Rock concluded a three-game road trip that day at Edinboro by earning its second straight 6-0 win, improving to 3-2-1 when playing away games.
Â
A win over Seton Hill would ensure that The Rock will not finish below .500 on the road in the regular season.
NEARING WIN #100
Head coach
Jessica Giegucz is just one win away from her 100
th career win at the helm of the Slippery Rock women's soccer program. Giegucz, who is now in her 10
th season leading The Rock, has amassed a 99-45-23 record in her time with SRU.
Â
Giegucz picked up her 100
th overall career win last year. As the head coach of Division III Northland College in 2014, Giegucz brought an 11-9-1 record when she joined The Rock in 2015.
Â
WHERE THEY STAND
Slippery Rock finds itself in a tight battle for the top spot in the PSAC West with Gannon and Indiana University (Pa.). The Golden Knights currently rank first with 15 points (4-0-3), while IUP holds a head-to-head tiebreaker over SRU for second. Both The Rock and the Crimson Hawks sit at 14 points with 4-1-2 league records.
Â
The Rock are four points ahead of Edinboro in fourth and five points to the good in terms of qualifying for the PSAC Tournament, ahead of Seton Hill in fifth.
Â
The top four teams in the PSAC West will qualify for the PSAC Tournament with the top two seeds each hosting quarterfinal matches. The top remaining seed in the PSAC West will welcome the two PSAC East quarterfinal winners over to host the remainder of the playoffs.
Â
RECORD WATCH
Patrick and Sarver have both solidified themselves in the top 15 all-time in shots attempted. Sarver jumped past
Ashley Rea for ninth place with 139 shots, while Patrick ranks 15
th with 114 total shot attempts.
Â
With 56 points, Patrick is now tied for 17
th all-time with Lauren Steele. She is eight points out of the top 10, guarded by Jen Canucci and Beth Kimball with 64.
Â
By playing against Ashland, Patrick competed in her 67
th consecutive game, ranking ninth all-time. With a spot in the starting lineup against the Griffins, Patrick would become one of just four SRU players all-time to start 68 straight matches (Haley Burkholder, Dana Kiger, Izabel Scott).
Â
Allman has moved up to ninth in all-time saves with 89, jumping past Melinda Swan's 85 (1998-99). Allman also stacks up eighth with 16 all-time wins, third with six career ties and 10
th with 10 total shutouts. Now with 29 career starts, the Olmsted Township, Ohio goalkeeper ranks eighth in school history, three starts in net behind Sarah Lacy (2005-09).
