LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University cross country standout
Marianne Abdalah finished second overall at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championships Saturday at Lock Haven University to qualify as an individual for the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championships.

Slippery Rock finished seventh in the team standings in a field of 22 complete teams with 219 total points. Edinboro claimed the region title with 73 points, followed by Seton Hill in second with 106 points and Charleston (W.Va.) in third with 137 points. Those three teams will represent the region at the national meet. Bloomsburg was fourth with 153 points, followed by Lock Haven (165), Gannon (214), Slippery Rock (219), Davis & Elkins (228), Shippensburg (232) and Kutztown (259) rounding out the top 10.

Abdalah covered the 6,000-meter course in 21:25 to place second overall and pick up an All-Region honor in the process. She was 11 seconds clear of the third place runner and 18 seconds ahead of fifth place. Her top five finish automatically qualifies her to compete at the National Championships Nov. 20 in St. Leo, Florida. West Chester's Sarah Supplee is the other individual qualifier from the region.

Anna Igims just missed out on an All-Region finish as SRU's second scorer as she took 29th in 22:43. The top 25 runners are named to the All-Region team.

Madison Murtland was the third scorer for The Rock in 42nd place in 22:58.
Katie Plassio followed in 66th in 23:41 and
Steph Keelon rounded out the scorers in 84th place in 23:58.

Chelsea Hunt was 91st in 24:04 and
Chloe Kurpakus was 102nd in 24:19 to round out SRU's entries in the race.

Saturday marked the end of the 2021 season for all of The Rock runners other than Abdalah, who will continue at the national meet Nov. 20. The rest of the squad will turn their focus to the indoor track season, which is scheduled to begin the first weekend in December.
