Rock set for road battle at Cal U

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team will open the second half of its 2019-20 PSAC West schedule when it travels to California (Pa.) for a conference matchup with tipoff set for 1 p.m.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team will open the second half of its 2019-20 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division schedule when it travels to California University (Pa.) for a conference matchup with tip off set for 1 p.m.

ALL-TIME SERIES
California leads the all-time series over The Rock, 58-27, including a 68-59 victory over SRU at Morrow Field House earlier this season. The last victory for Slippery Rock over No. 10 Cal U came last season in a 72-61 home win over the Vulcans. The victory snapped a 35-game losing streak to California dating back to the 2002-03 season.
 
LAST MEETING WITH THE VULCANS
Slippery Rock last met Cal U on Jan. 6 at Morrow Field House with the Vulcans coming away with a 68-59 road victory. Slippery Rock kept the game contest close for virtually the entire game as the Vulcans lead didn't surpass more than 12 at any point of the game and was in single digits for 35:11 of the 40 minutes.
 
The Rock trailed by 12 points with 9:30 to play in regulation before cutting the Vulcans' advantage down to six points on three separate occasions at the 6:38, 5:54 and 3:19 marks in the fourth quarter.
 
However, each time SRU narrowed the deficit to two possessions the Cal U was able to answer back with a run of their own on the way to the eventual nine-point win. Brooke Hinderliter led the Slippery Rock scoring attack with 17 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists.
 
California was led on offense by Monica Burns who poured in 25 points thanks in part to a 12-for-13 showing at the foul line.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• Last Time Out: Slippery Rock is coming off a hard fought, 69-66, home loss to Gannon. The Rock and Golden Knights played to a 34-34 tie at halftime before Gannon opened the second half by scoring 18 of 25 points in the third quarter.
 
SRU responded with a 16-6 run of their own, ending with an opportunity to hit the game-tying 3-pointer as time expired, but ultimately came up short in what was The Rock's second-straight loss.
 
• The three-point loss to Gannon marked the eighth game this season decided by five points or less for SRU.
 
• Slippery Rock enters play ranking second in the PSAC in free throws made (328) along with free throws attempted (449) and 10th in free throw percentage (.731).
 
• SRU is led on offense by  Hinderliter who is coming off a bounce-back 19 points performance against Gannon. The senior is averaging 19.1 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game.
 
• Madison Johnson and Daeja Quick round out the scoring leaders for The Rock with per game averages of 14.5 and 11.3 respectively. Johnson also leads Slippery Rock in 3-point field goals made (24) while Quick leads the way for SRU in assists (65) and assists per game (3.3).

• LeeAnn Gibson leads the way for SRU in field goal percentage, hitting on 47.9 percent of her shots this season, averaging 9.0 points per game along with 7.4 rebounds per game.
 
• Karington Ketterer has recorded blocks in seven of The Rock's last eight games including multi-block performances in two of the last three contests. Ketterer is averaging a block per game while being tied for 11th in the PSAC in total blocks (20) this season.
 
• Brittany Andrews has been a key contributor for Slippery Rock over the last two games off the bench. The Junior scored a career-high eight points against Edinboro (1/25) along with scoring five points along with a career-best two assists last time out against Gannon.
 
ROCK IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
Slippery Rock enters action Saturday as one of the best free throw shooting teams in the nation. SRU ranks seventh in Division ll, and 10th in the entire NCAA, with 328 made free throws.
 
Slippery Rock averages 22.5 free throw attempts per game while averaging 16.4 made free throws per contest. The Rock is on pace to finish with 459 made free throws this season, which would rank second in program history for free throws made in a season behind only the 1990-91 Rock team that finished with 484 foul shots.
 
JOHNSON CLIMBING TRANSFER SCORING LIST
Following a 12-point performance against Gannon, Johnson now sits at 779 points in her 75-game career for SRU. The 779 points rank 28th in program history all-time while also totaling the seventh-highest total of any player that has transferred to The Rock.

RECORD BREAKING START FOR HINDERLITER
Hinderliter will be making her 104th career start when she takes the floor against Cal U. By doing so she will surpass Amber McFeely (2002-06) for the most starts by a player in program history.
 
Additionally, if Hinderliter plays in all nine of Slippery Rock's remaining eight games, she will tie Morgan Henderson (2015-19) for the most games played in a career in program history with 112.
 
HINDERLITER CLIMBING ALL-TIME POINTS LIST
Hinderliter enters action Saturday ranked third in program history for points in a career with 1,582.
 
The senior, who ranks 18th among all active NCAA Division ll players in scoring, is on pace to finish her career with 1,734 points which would rank second in program history for points in a career behind only Heather Kearney (1,760 points l 1995-99).
 
Currently, Hinderliter trails Kory Fielitz (1,694 l 1990-94) for second place in program history. For Hinderliter to pass Kearney for the program record she would need to average 22.3 points per game over SRU's final nine contests.
 
GIBSON APPROACHING 500/500 CLUB
Gibson continued her march to the 500-point l 500 rebound club with a 10 point and two rebound performance against Gannon. Gibson is currently on pace to become the 17th player in program history to record 500 points and 500 rebounds in their career.
 
Entering the California game, Gibson has scored 607 points and grabbed 462 rebounds. With eight games remaining in the regular season Gibson needs to average 4.8 rebounds per contest the rest of the year to achieve the feat.
 
Gibson is enjoying a career-year as a senior with per game averages of 9.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game over 18 starts all while leading The Rock in field goal percentage at 47.9 percent.
 
QUICK CATCHING FIRE
Quick has caught fire on offense for Slippery Rock, scoring in double-figures in each of the last four games. Since Jan. 18, the junior is averaging 12.8 points, 4.0 assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game.
 
RECORDS WATCH
Hinderliter's name is littered throughout SRU's career record book. She comes into the weekend ranked second in free throws made (450) and free throws attempted (539) along with third in points (1,582), third in field goals attempted (1,275), third in free throw percentage (.835), third in offensive rebounds (227) and fifth in field goals made (540).
 
Gibson ranks tied for fourth in program history in offensive rebounds (189), 16th in career foul shots made (193), 16th in minutes played (2,185) and 21st in total rebounds (462).
 
Ketterer is tied for 16th in blocked shots all-time (37).
 
ON AND OFF THE COURT
Along with their on the court accomplishments this season, The Rock's starting five of Gibson (3.83 GPA), Hinderliter (3.39 GPA), Johnson (3.58 GPA), Ketterer (4.0 GPA) and Quick (3.13 GPA) have been stellar in the classroom. The five have compiled a combined cumulative GPA of 3.59.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS
The Vulcans enter play with the best turnover margin the conference at +7.80. Cal U averages 13.0 turnovers per game while forcing 20.8 opponent turnovers per game.
 
Offensively, California scores 69.5 points per game, the eighth-most points per game in the PSAC this season. The Vulcan scoring attack is led by Monica Burns who averages 15.0 points per game.
 
Burns is followed by Bianca Jasper who averages 10.6 points along with a team-best 4.7 assists per game. Shauna Harrison leads the rebounding effort for Cal U, averaging 5.3 boards per contest.
 
UP NEXT
Slippery Rock returns home to host Clarion Wednesday with tipoff slated for 5:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles picked up a close 63-60 home victory over The Rock earlier this season.
