NCAA Tournament Preview: Rock vs. West Chester

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will open NCAA Tournament play when it hosts West Chester for a second round contest 1 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will open NCAA Tournament play when it hosts West Chester University for a second round contest 1 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.

SGA TO COVER STUDENT TICKETS
The Slippery Rock Universtiy Student Government Association (SGA) will purchase tickets for any SRU student interested in attending The Rock's NCAA Tournament match against West Chester.
 
To receive free entry to the game, students simply need to have the CORQ application downloaded on their phones and present their valid Slippery Rock ID card at the entrance of James Egli Field on Saturday.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
Slippery Rock entered the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the PSAC Western Division and defeated Indiana University (Pa.), 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament followed by a 1-0 overtime win over East Stroudsburg University in the semifinal round.
 
SRU secured its first PSAC title since the 2012 season in a 2-1 victory over Edinboro in the conference championship game, clinching an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament and an eventual No. 2 seed. 
 
West Chester entered the PSAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed in the PSAC Eastern Division and defeated first seeded Bloomsburg University, 1-0, in the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament followed by a 1-0 loss to Edinboro in the PSAC Tournament semifinal round.
 
The Golden Rams earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as the sixth seed in the Atlantic Region. WCU defeated Concord University, 2-0, in the first round to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. 
 
ROCK NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
Slippery Rock has advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times and has played 19 NCAA Tournament games. In those contests, SRU has a 10-9 record including a 3-2 record over its last five games tournament games.
 
The last win for Slippery Rock in the NCAA Tournament came in 2013 when The Rock defeated No. 6 California University (Pa.) in the second round of the tournament.
 
LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock defeated West Chester, 1-0, in a road contest on Oct. 20, 2018. A back-and-forth defensive battle took place in the first half with SRU turning away eight Golden Ram shots while WCU stopped eight Rock shots to send the contest to halftime scoreless.
 
The scoreless tie was broken in the 56th minute when Brooke Testa netted a pass from Rachel Edge to give Slippery Rock a 1-0 advantage.
 
Following the score, The Rock defense downed another seven shots by West Chester led by SRU goalkeeper Kylie Downs who finished the afternoon with four saves in 90 clean minutes to secure a 1-0 road victory for Slippery Rock.
 
SERIES HISTORY
West Chester leads the all-time series 19-9-2. The Rock holds a 6-5-1 record at home against the Golden Rams, although WCU has won each of the last two matchups on Slippery Rock's home turf.
 
Slippery Rock and West Chester have met four times in the NCAA Tournament with the Golden Rams taking each of the four matchups. The last meeting between the two teams came in 2012 with WCU coming away with a 1-0 victory in the third round of the tournament.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
• LAST TIME OUT – Slippery Rock defeated Edinboro, 2-1, in the PSAC Championship game. 
 
The Rock offense was supplied by Sofia Harrison who opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a looped shot from 15 yards out and Kayla Swope who headed home the game-winner on a perfect free kick from Georgia Nagucki in the 75th minute.
 
SRU goalkeeper Emma Yoder finished the afternoon with five saves including a crucial stop on a penalty kick by EU in the 79th minute to maintain Slippery Rock's 2-1 advantage.
 
• CHAMPIONS – The win over Edinboro marked the fourth PSAC title in the program history for The Rock and its first since 2012. SRU's four conference championships are tied for the second most in PSAC history with Bloomsburg and West Chester.
 
The PSAC championship also secured Slippery Rock its first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament since its last conference championship in 2012 and its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2013. 
 
• NCAA TOURNAMENT FIELD – The PSAC is well represented in this year's 56-team NCAA Tournament field. Bloomsburg was named the No. 1 seed in the region followed by Slippery Rock as the No. 2 seed. Both teams earned first-round byes and the right to host the first two rounds of the tournament.
 
Millersville is the No. 4 seed and East Stroudsburg is the fifth seed. West Chester rounds out the Atlantic Region field as the No. 6 seed.
 
• PROGRAM RECORD – Along with clinching a PSAC championship in the win over Edinboro, SRU set a new program record for wins in a single-season at 18, surpassing the previous record of 17 wins set in 2007.
 
The Rock's 18 wins this season are the most among any team in the PSAC and are the second-most in the Atlantic Region behind Concord with 19.
 
• ALL-REGION HONOREES – Edge, Madison Johnson and Jordyn Minda garnered D2CCA first team All-Atlantic Region honors the organization announced on Wednesday.
 
Minda became the first Rock women's soccer player to earn back-to-back All-Atlantic Region honors since Dana O'Neill in 2012-13.
 
 Johnson earned her third career all-region honor after being named first team All-PSAC Western Division and PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Year.
 
Edge garnered the first All-Atlantic Region honor of her career after being named first team All-PSAC Western Division and PSAC West Athlete of the Year.
 
• STREAKING – The current six-game win streak for Slippery Rock is tied for the sixth-longest such streak in all of Division ll. The streak marks the second time this season Slippery Rock has won six or more straight games.
 
The PSAC Championship clinching win over Edinboro also marked the third-straight postseason victory for The Rock, the longest such streak since winning three-straight playoff games in 2012.
 
• TAKE TWO – Slippery Rock scored two goals against Edinboro, marking the 16th game this season The Rock has scored two or more goals.
 
In games when SRU scores two or more times this season, it has a perfect 16-0-0 record.

•  AT EGLI - Since the 2003 season, Slippery Rock and West Chester have met three times at James Egli Field. West Chester has won two of the three matchups including the last game at Egli Field in 2017, 2-1, over The Rock. SRU's last win against WCU at James Egli Field came in 2003. 
 
• SCORING MACHINE – With two goals against EU, The Rock has scored 56 goals this season, tied for the second-most in program history with the 1999 team. The program record for goals scored in a season was set by the 2003 team that scored 67 goals.
 
• LEADING THE WAY – Edge leads the way for the SRU offense with 39 points on 15 goals and nine assists. Swope is second with 23 points on seven goals and nine assists, Minda rounds out the top-three for Slippery Rock on offense with 21 points on eight goals and five assists.
 
After scoring twice in the PSAC Tournament, Harrison is tied with Swope for the third-most goals for The Rock this season at seven.
 
• KEEPER COUNT – Yoder, the reigning PSAC Tournament MVP, recorded a combined 13 saves while allowing just two goals during conference tournament play.
 
On the season, the sophomore has a .833 save percentage along with a 0.76 goals against average and 80 saves.
 
• ROCK SOLID DEFENSE – After allowing only one goal or less in each of its three PSAC Tournament games, Slippery Rock has allowed more than one goal in a game just three times this season.
 
The Rock has allowed 16 total goals this season, the fourth-best mark among PSAC teams in the NCAA Tournament field. 

• EDGE CLIMBING CAREER RANKS - With a breakout season in 2019, Edge has climbed the career ranks in the SRU women's soccer record book. The sophomore ranks 11th in assists, 19th in points and 20th in goals. 
 
• ROUNDING OUT THE ATTACK – Tyler Spence is fourth for SRU this season with six goals followed by Nagucki, Kaitlyn Barackman and Shannon McIntyre with three goals scored this season.
 
McIntyre is second for Slippery Rock with seven assists this season with Minda being next with five assists. Spence has four assists this season followed by Harrison, Nagucki, Barackman, Brooke Riefenstahl, Miranda Gallucci and Julia Mascaro with two assists each.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN RAMS
• Last time out: West Chester defeated Concord University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 2-0, at James Egli Field Thursday afternoon.
 
Madison Baxter opened the scoring in the 48th minute with her fifth goal of the season on a feed from Jenny Bail to give WCU a 1-0 advantage.
 
Bail scored what proved to be the game-winner when she played a pass from Baxter into the goal for her seventh score of the season in the 77th minute.
 
The score was the game-winner thanks to a stout effort by the Golden Ram defense, turning away all twelve shots by Concord including five saves by goalkeeper Hayley McGee.
 
• WCU is led on offense by Hannah Zach who has a team-best 23 points and 11 goals while adding one assist. Bail is second for the Golden Rams with 17 points on seven goals and three assists. Dani Cady has guided the West Chester offense with a team-high five assists.
 
• In goal, Brooke Myers and McGee have split time with Myers starting 15 games and McGee starting five times. Myers has a .712 save percentage along with a 1.02 goals against average and 37 saves.
 
McGee has an .833 save percentage with a 0.58 goals against average and 15 saves this season including starting each of West Chester's three postseason games.

Should Slippery Rock defeat West Chester, SRU would advance to the third round to take on the winner of the Bloomsburg-Millersville matchup with the date, time and location of the third round contest to be determined.
