McQuaide leads Rock women in opener

Courtney McQuaide won the pole vault with the nation's top mark so far this year to lead The Rock women's track and field team at the season opener Friday night at Youngstown State.

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University women's track and field team opened the 2018-19 indoor season with 21 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and three NCAA provisional marks at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker Friday night.
 
Courtney McQuaide led the way by winning the pole vault with a clearance of 3.87 meters, which is the top mark in the nation so far this year by a Division II athlete. She edged teammate Maddy Marshall for the win after Marshall placed second with a clearance of 3.72 meters, the fourth best mark in the nation so far this year. McQuaide and Marshall were two of four SRU women to at least reach the PSAC standard in the pole vault. Sarah Schneider placed eighth with a clearance of 3.47 meters and Lily Plute was 11th with a mark of 3.32 meters.
 
The third NCAA provisional mark of the night belonged to Reagan Hess, who placed second in the long jump with a leap of 5.75 meters, which ranks fifth in the nation so far this year. Hess also hit the PSAC standard with a 10th place finish in the 60-meter dash in 7.87 seconds. She was joined in reaching the PSAC mark in the long jump by Kaitlyn Bonczyk, who placed 18th with a leap of 5.10 meters. Bonczyk also hit the PSAC standard in the triple jump with a 14th place finish and a leap of 10.51 meters.
 
Amanda Oliver joined Hess in reaching the PSAC mark in the 60-meter dash with a 12th place finish in 7.87 seconds. She also placed 18th in the 200-meter dash in 25.86 seconds to lead three SRU runners to the PSAC mark. Aerial Dukes was 24th in 26.10 seconds and Rayna Stevenson was 25th in 26.33. Those three teamed with Morgan Donatelli to place fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:03.37.  Courtney Nunley capped the PSAC marks by the sprinters with a 24th place finish in the 400-meter dash in 1:00.45.
 
The Rock got three PSAC qualifying marks from its mid-distance runners in the mile. Madison Przicina led the way in fifth place in 5:21.51. She was followed closely in sixth place by Kacey Raible in 5:21.55 and seventh place by Juliet Ryan in 5:21.98.
 
The final PSAC mark on the track came from Sabrina Palmieri with an 11th place finish in the 5,000-meter run in 18:43.16.
 
Abby Way recorded a pair of PSAC marks to lead the throwers. She finished ninth in the shot put with a toss of 11.82 meters and was 17th in the weight throw with a mark of 13.09 meters. Rachel Hutchinson also hit the PSAC mark in the weight throw with an 18th place finish and a mark of 13.00 meters.
 
The final PSAC mark of the night belonged to Cecily Greggs with an 10th place finish in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters.
 
In addition to the athletes that competed Friday, Slippery Rock will be represented by three women Saturday at the Mike Kowal Multi meet hosted by Edinboro University. A complete recap from that competition will be posted Sunday.
 
Friday night's meet marked the only full team competition of the fall semester for SRU, which will take time off for the semester break and return to action Jan. 18 at the Youngstown State Invite.
