Rock set to play at #3 Shippensburg Saturday

The Slippery Rock field hockey team will hit the road to play third-ranked Shippensburg 1 p.m. Saturday for a non-conference game at the Robb Sports Complex.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team will hit the road to play No. 3 Shippensburg University 1 p.m. Saturday for a non-conference game at Robb Sports Complex in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania.

LAST MEETING
The Raiders received a first half goal from Kylie Huffman off of a penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead against The Rock. Slippery Rock came out firing in the second half, receiving a goal from Savanna Robinson at the 35:59 mark off a Renee Rosenblum assist. The game appeared to be heading to overtime until Emily Barnard scored a goal at the 69:46 mark to give Shippensburg the lead and the win on Oct. 8, 2016.
 
SERIES HISTORY
Shippensburg has the all-time series edge against The Rock with a record of 42-6-1. The Raiders currently own a 31-game winning streak against SRU, with Slippery Rock's last win coming in 1998. Shippensburg has been known as a powerhouse in field hockey during the past several years, as the Raiders have won two national titles since 2013 and have been ranked in the top five of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association top 10 poll in 11 of their last 14 games against The Rock dating back to 2009.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT – The Rock defeated Washington & Jefferson College, 1-0, in a non-conference road matchup at Cameron Stadium on Sept. 13. Both teams were scoreless for a majority of the game. It wasn't until the 62nd minute that Kayla Ulrich give The Rock a 1-0 lead and ultimately the win.
 
SLIPPERY ROCK SCORER'S – Through six games, seven players have recorded goals for The Rock. Ulrich leads the team with four goals, followed by Liz Wolfe, Courtney Page, Brittany Morgan, Allison Martin, Sam Geroski and Abby McKay all with one apiece.
 
A HELPING HAND – Five players have also recorded assists so far for Slippery Rock. Ulrich, Wolfe, Alyssa Castle, Brenna McGovern-Lind and Hannah Simone have all registered one assist apiece.
 
DON'T FORGET THE DEFENSE – Slippery Rock has had one of the stoutest defenses in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference so far this year. SRU is currently tied for third in goals allowed, giving up just four scores through six games. The other three teams that are either tied or ahead of Slippery Rock in the ranking have played at least one or fewer games than SRU.
 
CAPTIVATING KEEPERS – A big part of The Rock's defensive success has come from exceptional goalie play. Both Maddie Murphy and Nicole Bream have seen time at net so far this season. In six games played, Murphy is 2-0 with 13 saves, a .923 save percentage and a 0.25 goals against average. She has started The Rock's last two games. Bream is 2-2 with 12 saves, a .800 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average over four games played.
 
A FRESHMAN TO FEAR – Ulrich has had a very strong start to her Slippery Rock career. Through just six games, she has already cracked the top-ten in four different SRU freshmen record categories. She ranks first in shots on goal (20), fourth in shots (25), is tied for third in goals (four) and tied for sixth in points (nine).
 
ROCK NATIONAL RANKINGS – As a team, Slippery Rock ranks second in Division II in defensive saves (5), second in save percentage (.879) and fifth in goals against average (.67). Individually, Murphy ranks first in save percentage (.929) and goals against average (.25), while Kayla Mack ranks third in defensive saves (3).

SCOUTING THE RAIDERS
Shippensburg enters the game having won a home non-conference matchup against No. 2 ranked Millersville, 6-1, on Sept. 12.
 
Through five games, Shippensburg ranks fifth in Division II in goals per game (3.80), fifth in points per game (10.00) and second in penalty corners per game (15.40).
 
The Raiders have received goals from eight players so far this season. Barnard leads the pack with seven, followed by Rebecca Bouyea with five and Brooke Sheibley with two. Jazmin Petrantonio, Mary Spisak, Aerin Kolfoort, Kylie Huffman and Megan Green have all recorded one goal apiece.
 
Shippensburg has also had three players record assists so far this year. Petrantonio leads the team with nine, followed by Spisak with two and Sheibley with one.
 
The Raiders starting goalkeeper is Ally Mooney. Through five games, Mooney has allowed six goals while recording 22 saves for a save percentage of .786 and a goals against average of 1.27.
