New/Sortable Box Score 2 WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Slippery Rock University volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a pair of non-conference wins over Lees-McRae and Chowan Friday night at the Spike Out Hunger Challenge hosted by Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The Rock started the day by beating Lees-McRae 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-22) and went on to earn a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-20) against Chowan, the 2015 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Runner-Up.
Leah Jones and
Brooke Bostwick led The Rock against Lees-McRae with eight kills apiece.
Haley Defibaugh recorded 18 assists, while
Courtney Oberlander had a team-high 14 digs. Jones also served up three aces against Lees-McRae.Â
Rookie
Kaley Fucci had a breakout game against Chowan with a team-high 13 kills.
Kelsey Boyle added 11 kills, while Jones and Bostwick each had nine.Â
Defibaugh dished out 26 assists against Chowan and Oberlander had 41 digs to round out the top performers.Â
The Rock concludes the Spike Out Hunger Challenge Saturday against Mount Olive at 9 a.m. before squaring off against host Winston-Salem State at 2 p.m.
