Final ResultsYOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's track and field team set 23 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks, five NCAA provisional qualifying marks and broke one school record Friday night at the Younstown State College Invitational at the Watson and Tressel Training Site.
Â
The highlight of the night belonged to the 4x400-meter relay team of
Jacob VanHouten,
Monte Chapman,
James Chandler and
Hunter Williams, which broke the Slippery Rock record and posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:16.19. That time placed the foursome second only to the University of Pittsburgh's Division I team and is the fourth fastest time recorded in Division II so far this year.
Â
Because the times in the official Slippery Rock record book are converted to a 200-meter flat track and Youngstown State is an oversized track, the converted time comes in at 3:19.31 and breaks the former record of 3:19.90 that was set last winter by VanHouten, Williams,
Nathaniel Helfferich and
Trevor Foley.
Â
The next highlight of the night came from
Trevor Miller, who recorded Slippery Rock's only individual win at the meet with a victory in the shot put. His throw of 16.76 meters bettered his previous NCAA provisional mark from this season and stands as the eighth best throw in the nation so far this year. It is also just shy of the SRU record of 16.85 meters set by Cory Darr in 2000.
Â
The Rock also put forth a dominant showing in the pole vault, placing four athletes in the top six and recording three NCAA provisional qualifying marks. The event win went to Slippery Rock alum Cameron Daugerty, who completed his athletic eligibility two years ago as a national champion.
Â
Jordan Pacheco followed Daugherty as the first collegiate finisher and matched his NCAA provisional leap from last week at 4.85 meters, which is the seventh best clearance in the country this year.
Cody Colagrande placed third at 4.75 meters, besting
Andrew Koksal on misses as Koksal also cleared 4.75 meters to place fourth. Their marks currently rank as the 15th best clearance in the nation.
Â
Slippery Rock also got a PSAC qualifying mark in the pole vault from
Keiffer Reed, who placed sixth with a clearance of 4.45 meters.
Â
Miller was joined in the shot put by
Jerrod Galloway and
David Reinhardt in reaching at least the PSAC qualifying mark. Galloway placed seventh with a toss of 14.11 meters and Reinhardt was 14th at 13.60 meters.
Â
Miller also recorded a PSAC qualifying mark in the weight throw to lead three SRU throwers in the event. He took seventh with a toss of 16.20 meters. Reinhardt was 10th at 15.43 meters and Nick Garruccio was 13th at 14.72 meters.
Â
Caleb Smithco and
Adam Leeper each recorded PSAC qualifying leaps in the long and triple jump events. Smithco was fifth in the long jump at 6.68 meters and fifth in the triple jump at 13.75 meters. Leeper was eighth in the long jump at 6.51 meters and fourth in the triple jump at 13.78 meters.
Â
Slippery Rock recorded eight PSAC qualifying marks on the track, led by the performance of the 60-meter hurdlers.
Noah Bostick placed fourth in 8.51 seconds and was joined in hitting the PSAC standard by VanHouten in 11th at 8.87 seconds and
Ben Kloepping in 12th at 8.90 seconds.
Â
The highest finish in an individual event on the track went to
Tyler Melius, who took third in the 800-meter run with a PSAC qualifying time of 1:56.49.
Â
Eric Record recorded PSAC qualifying times in both short sprints, placing ninth in the 60-meter dash in 7.13 seconds and finishing 10th in the 200-meter dash in 22.72 seconds. He was joined in the 60m by Chapman, who placed 15th at 7.22 seconds.
Â
The final PSAC qualifier of the meet came from Theo Reynolds in the 5,000-meter run. He took 21st place in 15:41.03, just coming in under the PSAC standard of 15:43.00.
Â
A total of 21 schools competed in the meet, including five Division I schools and 10 Division II schools. Slippery Rock was joined by fellow PSAC institutions Indiana (Pa.), California (Pa.), Clarion and Pitt-Johnstown.
Â
The Rock continues the 2014-15 season next weekend at the Division II Challenge at the SPIRE facility in Geneva, Ohio. The 5,000-meter run will take place Friday evening and the remainder of the meet will take place Saturday, Jan 31.
