SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will host Millersville in the Tourbeau Sport's NSCAATV National Game of the Week Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium at 1 p.m.
Live Coverage: Tourbeau Sports will stream the game for free to a national audience via a live HD video stream at the link above. National Rankings: Slippery Rock slipped out of the national rankings this week and fell into a group of team's that received votes in the rankings. Millersville is also in that select group of team's also receiving votes in the national rankings.
Regional Rankings: This week's official NCAA Atlantic Region rankings are not out yet, but will likely feature a shakeup after last week's results. In last week's initial rankings, Slippery Rock was No. 3 and Millersville was No. 4.
Records: Slippery Rock enters the weekend with an overall record of 11-3-1 and a PSAC mark of 6-3. The Rock had a seven-game winning streak snapped two weekend's ago and has now lost two of their last three games.
Millersville enters the game with a 10-4-1 overall record and a 7-2 PSAC mark. The Marauders are riding a three-game winning streak in which they are outscoring opponents 13-2.
PSAC Playoff Picture: Both teams have clinched a berth in the PSAC playoffs. Millersville can still end up with a first round bye as the No. 2 seed, but would need to win both of its final two games and have Mercyhurst lose its last game. Slippery Rock can be no higher than the No. 3 seed and no lower than the No. 5 seed. The No. 3 and No 4 seeds will host a quarterfinal game Nov. 5, while the No. 5-6 teams will travel for those games.
Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 32-11 and outshooting the opposition 228-185.
Stephen Donnelly leads the team with six goals and two assists, while
Michael Ramirez has added six goals and one assist and
Zach Hall and
Dom Francis each have four goals and three assists.
Joshua Gray leads the team and ranks fourth in the nation in assists with 10, just one shy of the best mark in the country.
Declan Brennan has added four goals and one assist and
Brandon Chiu has three goals to cap the top scorers. SRU leads the Atlantic Region in team goals against average and save percentage.
Chris Zier has won eight-of-10 starts for SRU and owns an 8-3 record with a region-best 0.77 goals against average and a region-best .879 save percentage, which is also the fifth-highest in the nation. He has made 58 saves and allowed just eight goals in nearly 935 minutes of action.
Streaking: The Rock has been defeated in just seven games dating back to the beginning of last season, going unbeaten in 29-of-36 games.
Scouting the Marauders: Millersville is outscoring opponents 35-15 and outshooting the opposition 259-149.
Andrew Dukes leads the team with eight goals and five assists, while Jeramey Robbins has added six goals and eight assists and Jaime Vazquez has seven goals and two assists. Those three have scored 60% of the team's total goals.
Ben Johnstown has three goals and a team-high 10 assists to rank in a tie for fourth in the nation with SRU's Gray and Zack Caracciolo has three goals and three assists to cap the top scorers.
Brad Benzing has started 14 games in goal for Millersville and is 10-3-1 with a 0.92 goals against average and a .764 save percentage. He has allowed 13 goals and made 42 saves in just over 1,275 minutes in goal.
Series: Millersville owns an 14-9-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 2-1 overtime win last season.
Last Meeting: (
Box Score) Millersville got two goals from Andrew Dukes, including a game-winner in the 99th minute with just 1:11 to play in the first overtime as Millersville handed SRU a 2-1 defeat Oct. 13 at Slippery Rock.
Blake McChesney scored for SRU in the 14th minute off an assist from Michal Ramirez, but Dukes tied the game in the 63rd minute to send it to overtime.
Millersville posted advantages of 20-12 in total shots, 10-4 in shots on goal and 14-6 in corner kicks.
Clayton Master made seven saves in goal for SRU, while Brad Benzing made three saves for Millersville.
Highlighted Historical Game: Millersville was ranked No. 1 in the nation and traveled to No. 12 Slippery Rock for the PSAC title game in 2009. More than 1,200 people attended the game, making it one of the highest attended Division II games of the year.
Slippery Rock went up 2-0 and held on for a 2-1 victory, knocking off the No. 1 Marauders and claiming the PSAC title. That game also knocked Millersville out of the No. 1 spot in the region and gave SRU hosting rights in the regional the next weekend, where both Millersville (first round) and Slippery Rock (second round) were eliminated by Charleston (W. Va.).
Jeremy Deighton, who went on to play pro soccer for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, was named the tournament MVP. Millersville was forced to play the last portion of the second half with 10 men after its starting goalkeeper was handed a red card for playing the ball with his hands outside the box.
The Rock set the single season record for wins that season, finishing 18-4-1.
Head Coaches: Michael Bonelli is in his fourth season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. Bonelli has posted a record of 40-22-10 during his SRU tenure. He has led the program to two berths in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs and one appearance in the conference title game.
Steve Widdowson is in his seventh season at Millersville, where has had led the team to a winning record and a PSAC playoff berth in all six previous years. He owns a record of 90-39-8 in his tenure at Millersville. Widdowson led the team to the PSAC title in 201 and has taken the squad to the NCAA Tournament three times.
Up Next: Slippery Rock will close the regular season at Shippensburg Nov. 2 before the PSAC quarterfinals Nov. 5 at a location that will be determined by the outcomes of this week's games.
