Rock takes season finale from UPJ, 2-1

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team closed its season with a 2-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown Thursday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team closed its season with a 2-1 win over Pitt-Johnstown Thursday at James Egli Field.
 
With the win, Slippery Rock improved to 7-7-3 overall with a 4-4-2 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division, while Pitt-Johnstown's record dropped to 7-8-1 overall and a 2-7-1 mark in the PSAC West.
 
Patrick Tierney scored the game-winning goal for The Rock, while SRU picked up its first tally via an own goal from the Mountain Cats. Tierney's marker was his second of the season.
 
Kaden Reynolds led The Rock with four shots. Tierney (3), Colton Swanson (2), Zsombor Retfalvi (2) and Gerard Lopez Marti (2) took multiple shots for The Rock. Cornelis Dedecker, Massimo Cuda, Jack Smith, Gabin Lonjard, Rocco Birns, Jimmy Irani, Dalton DeShong and Aashi Pandher rounded out Slippery Rock's shot takers with one shot each.
 
Alvey Kaufman made five saves as Slippery Rock's goalkeeper in the victory.
 
Slippery Rock opened the scoring in the 12th minute off a set piece. Swanson's corner kick missed everybody until the ball hit two Pitt-Johnstown defenders and ended up in the net, giving Slippery Rock a 1-0 lead.
 
SRU entered halftime with a 9-4 advantage in shots and a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
 
Pitt-Johnstown found an equalizer in the 48th minute after miscommunication by Slippery Rock led to Ryan Kyei Boahen slotting the ball into an open goal, tying the game 1-1.
 
SRU regained its lead in 73rd minute off another set piece. Reynolds' corner kick to the near post was deflected by a Pitt-Johnstown defender, before Tierney put home the loose ball, giving Slippery Rock a 2-1 lead. The Rock would then run out the final 17 minutes without giving up a goal-scoring opportunity.
 
Slippery Rock finished the game with a 21-9 advantage in shots and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal.

Thursday's game was the final one of the season for Slippery Rock, which has now finished back-to-back seasons with at least a .500 winning percentage.
