No. 21 Rock women host Kutztown Wednesday

No. 21 Slippery Rock, ranked third in the Atlantic Region, will host the region's No. 4 team Kuztown Wednesday in a PSAC match at 3 p.m.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 21st-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will open a five-game homestand Wednesday when Kutztown University visits James Egli Field for a3 p.m. Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match.

Rankings: Slippery Rock has been ranked in six of the seven national polls this year and is No. 21 in this week's poll, released Tuesday. Kutztown is not nationally ranked, but ranks fourth in the Atlantic Region, just one spot behind Slippery Rock.

Records: Slippery Rock enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-2-1 and PSAC mark of 7-2-1. The Rock is coming riding a three-game shutout streak in which it outscored Mercyhurst, Bloomsburg and Lock Haven by a combined score of 10-0.

Kutztown may be the hottest team in the region right now with seven consecutive wins. The Golden Bears enter the game with overall and PSAC records of 8-3-0.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 22-6 and outshooting the opposition 155-75.

Andrea Felix leads the team with seven goals and two assists, while Dara Demich has four goals and one assist and Nicole Krueger has three goals and one assist. Crysta Ganter has two goals and three assists, Allison Harbart has one goal and three assists and Cailin Conner and Lauren Impey each have one goal and two assists to cap the top scorers.

The Rock's back four has allowed just 34 shots on target in 11 games, which has led to the team owning a goals against average of 0.53, which ranks third in the region and 17th in the nation.

Scouting the Golden Bears: Kutztown is outscoring opponents 19-7 and outshooting the opposition 183-78.

Sam Costello leads the team with four goals and seven assists. Megan Frailer has three goals and two assists, Alaina Curry has three goals and Rubi Mink has two goals and two assists.

Katie Miller has two goals and Diana Malanga has one goal and two assists to cap the top scorers.

Goalkeepers: Dana O'Neill has started nine games in goal for SRU and is 6-2-1 with a 0.66 goals against average and a .786 save percentage. Annabelle Hegeman has made two starts and has not allowed a goal.

Alina Rakiewicz has started all 11 games in goal for Kutztown and is 8-3 with a 0.67 goals against average and a .841 save percentage.

Series: Slippery Rock owns a 10-7-1 advantage in the all-time series, but Kutztown won the last meeting, 3-1 last fall in Kutztown.

Last Time: (Box Score): Kuztown handed then fifth-ranked Slippery Rock a 3-1 loss in the early part of the 2012 season last fall in Kutztown.

Slippery Rock scored first and led 1-0 at halftime before the Golden Bears scored three unanswered goals in the second half to earn the win.

Head Coaches: Noreen Herlihy, the reigning PSAC and Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, is in her 19th season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. She has led the team to 17 consecutive winning seasons and owns a career record of 232-105-28. The 17 straight winning seasons include 15 consecutive with at least 10 wins and ranks as the eighth-best streak in Division II history.

Erik Burstein is in his seventh season as the head coach at Kutztown, where he has led the program to a record of 86-38-11 and five consecutive trips to the PSAC playoffs. Burstein has guided the team to the NCAA Tournament three times in the last four seasons and has been the PSAC runner-up twice in his tenure.

PSAC Gets Deeper: With the addition of Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown to the PSAC this year, the league now has 17 women's soccer teams, meaning nearly every game on the 2013 schedule will count in the PSAC standings. The only non-conference game for SRU this season was a 1-0 win at Davis & Elkins Sept. 21.

Next Up: Slippery Rock continues its home stretch with a Homecoming game against Mansfield University Saturday at 1 p.m. at James Egli Field. That game will be followed by the program's 20th Anniversary Celebration event at the Robert Smith Center.
