SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The 10th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will open its home and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference portions of it schedule Wednesday when Mercyhurst University visits Egli Field for a 4 pm. match.
Live Coverage: Live statistics for the game will be provided by the SRU sports information office at the link above.
Rankings: Slippery Rock moved up four places to No. 10 in this week's NSCAA/Continental Tire Division II national rankings. The Rock is also ranked second in the Atlantic Region. Mercyhurst is not ranked nationally and is ranked in a three-way tie for sixth in the Atlantic Region.
Head Coaches: Noreen Herlihy is in her 18th season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. She has led the team to 16 consecutive winning seasons with 10 or more wins and owns a career record of 212-97-24. The 16 consecutive winning seasons ranks eighth all-time in Division II history. Herlihy is a 1992 graduate of Mercyhurst College with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine. She also owns a master's degree in sports administration from Slippery Rock.
Keith Cammidge is in his 11th season at the helm of the Mercyhurst women's program. He is also in his third season as the director of soccer operations, which is a title he carries with both the men's and women's teams. Cammidge was the head coach of the men's team from 2002-09 and still serves as an assistant coach for the men. He owns a career women's record of 126-59-15. Cammidge earned his bachelor's degree from Boston University and his master's degree from Northeastern University.
Series History: Mercyhurst leads the all-time series between the two teams by a 14-4-1 margin. The one tie, a scoreless 74 minute game, came last season at Mercyhurst when the game was called before the full 90 minutes after lightning in the area.
Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock opened its season with five newcomers in the starting lineup, including three true freshmen. One of those freshmen,
Crysta Ganter, scored the game-winner and only goal in the season-opening 1-0 win on the road at Wheeling Jesuit. In that game, SRU was dominant, allowing just one shot on goal and recorded advantages of 12-3 in total shots and 9-0 in corner kicks. Slippery Rock's roster also features the top eight returning scorers from last season's NCAA Round of 16 squad.
Dana O'Neill played the entire 90 minutes in goal in Slippery Rock's one game this season, posting a shutout and recording one save.
Scouting the Lakers: Mercyhurst will open its away and PSAC portions of the schedule with this game. The Lakers opened the year with a pair of non-conference wins last week, defeating Ashland 1-0 at home and Notre Dame (Ohio) 1-0 at the Gannon Tournament. Mercyhurst is being outshot 31-30 by opponents in two games this season, but has not allowed a goal. Sarah Slezak and Olivia Resch each tallied one goal in the Lakers' two games. Nikki Charboneau picked up an assist in the win over Notre Dame, while Sara Hawksworth and Gabrielle Catrabone lead the team in shots with five each. Ellie McDougall has played every minute in goal in Mercyhurst's two games and has posted two shutouts, while recording 10 saves. She was honored Tuesday as the PSAC Player of the Week for her efforts in those two games.
Last Meeting: (
Box Score) The two teams played to a weather-shortened 0-0 tie last season in Erie. The game was stopped in the 73rd minute with heavy lightning in the area. Due to the NCAA rule that states once a game passes the 70 minute mark and can no longer be finished on the day it started, the result becomes final.
Mercyhurst posted a 14-6 advantage in total shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Rock registered an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Lisa Rodgers made five saves in goal for SRU, while Rachel Griepsma made three saves for the Lakers.
