Men's Semifinal Preview: Rock vs. West Chester Saturday

Slippery Rock will play West Chester Saturday in the PSAC semifinals at Mercyhurst with a trip to the conference title game on the line.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will face West Chester University in the semifinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Mercyhurst University in Erie.

Playoff Situation: Slippery Rock, the No. 6 seed in the playoffs, upset No. 3 seed Gannon in double overtime in the opening round to earn a semifinal match against No. 2 West Chester, which had a first round bye. Mercyhurst is the No. 1 seed and will play No. 4 seed Millersville in the other semifinal game.

The winners of Saturday's semifinal games will play for the title Sunday at noon at Mercyhurst.

Playoff History: Slippery Rock is back in the conference semifinals for the third time in the last four years and the second under third-year head coach Michael Bonelli. The Rock has not won in the semifinals since 2009 when the team went on to win the league title. Slippery Rock has won the league title six times: 1952, 1953, 1954, 1974, 2005, 2009.

Admission: The PSAC office mandates a $7 charge for adults and a $2 charge for students for all playoff games. All students from PSAC institutions with a valid ID will be admitted free. All proceeds from Saturday's semifinal rounds are being donated to the American Red Cross to aid with the relief efforts from this week's super storm.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the game with a 10-3-6 overall record, is riding a three game winning streak and is 4-0-1 in its last four games.

Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 35-17 and outshooting the opposition 296-245. Chris Davis leads the team with six goals and three assists. Stephen Donnelly ranks second with five goals and two assists and Michael Ramirez is in the middle of his best season with four goals and two assists. Ryan Lutke has four goals, including the game-winner in double overtime against Gannon in the first round. Brandon Chiu has three goals and two assists. Joshua Gray has two goals and four assist, Mike Roopchandsingh has two goals and three assists and Thad Madzelonka has three goals to cap the top scorers.

Clayton Master has started 18 games in goal for SRU and is 9-3-6 with eight shutouts. He has allowed 15 goals for a goals against average of 0.76 and has made 79 saves for a .840 save percentage.

Scouting the Golden Rams: West Chester surprised the PSAC this fall to earn the No. 2 seed in the playoffs, its first postseason appearance since 2007. The Golden Rams have never won a PSAC title.

West Chester is riding a five-game winning streak and brings an overall record of 8-7-2 into the postseason. The Golden Rams are outscoring opponents 25-20 and being outshot 201-199. Kevin McCann leads the team with six goals, while Connor Malarney has three goals and four assists and Christian Benner and Tommy Ryan each have three goals. Neil Gallagher and Alex Badulak each have two goals and one assist to cap the top scorers.

Garrett Bleiler has started 14 games in goal and is 8-6-2 with two shutouts. He has allowed 17 goals for a 1.17 goals against average and has made 59 saves for a .776 save percentage.

Head Coaches: Michael Bonelli is in his third season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. Bonelli has posted a record of 28-17-9 in his three seasons and has now taken Slippery Rock to the conference playoffs twice. Prior to his time at SRU, Bonelli spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the Division I level, with stints at Northwestern and Lafayette. He received a bachelor's degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland in 2004.

Kendal Walkes is in his 23rd season as the head coach at West Chester, where he has accumulated more than 200 career wins. Walkes hails from Trinidad and Tobago, where he was a member of the international team in the 1970s and 1980s, including playing appearances in the 1976 Olympics and the 1982 World Cup qualifying rounds.

Series History: West Chester owns an 11-7 edge in the all-time series, but Slippery Rock has been the better team in recent meetings. The Rock has won the last four meetings with the most recent West Chester win coming in 2007.

Last Meeting: (Box Score) Slippery Rock went on the road and handed West Chester a 2-0 defeat earlier this season on Oct. 9.

Chris Davis and Stephen Donnelly each tallied unassisted to goals to lead The Rock to the win. Clayton Master earned the shutout in goal after recording four saves.

Garrett Bleiler took the loss in goal for WCU, allowing two goals and recording four saves.

Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 12-11 in total shots and 6-5 in shots on goal. West Chester posted an 8-4 edge in corner kicks.
