Sweet 16 Preview: Rock vs. West Chester

Slippery Rock will meet West Chester Friday in the NCAA Round of 16 with a berth in the national quarterfinals on the line. Kickoff is set for a 11 a.m. Check out the complete game preview here.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will travel to West Chester University Friday for an NCAA Tournament Round of 16 match with a berth in the national quarterfinals on the line. Game time is set for  11 a.m.

What's at Stake: The winner of Friday's game will be declared the Atlantic Region champion and will meet the East Region champion Sunday in the NCAA quarterfinals with a trip to the Final Four on the line. The East Region title game will take place at 1:30 p.m. Friday at West Chester and will feature the College of St. Rose and Dowling.

Admission: Adults will be admitted for $7 with students and senior citizens being admitted for $3. Children between the ages of 2-12 will be admitted for $1 and children under the age of two will be free. All tickets must be purchased at the gate on game day. An all session pass will also be sold for $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens.

Playoff Picture: Slippery Rock is rolling through the postseason with a six game unbeaten streak with all of those games being played on the road. SRU was the No. 7 seed in the conference and defeated No. 2 seed West Chester, No. 6 seed East Stroudsburg and No. 1 seed California in a stretch of four days to claim the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title. The Rock then earned the No. 5 seed in the region and eliminated No. 4 Edinboro and No. 1 California in the opening two rounds of the NCAA Tournament.

West Chester was the top-ranked team in the region when Slippery Rock defeated the Golden Rams in the PSAC quarterfinals. They slipped to No. 2 in the region and earned a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament before defeating No. 6 seed West Virginia Wesleyan 1-0 in the second round to advance to the Round of 16.

NCAA Tournament History: Slippery Rock is making its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament, including its third consecutive, and is making its second straight trip to the Sweet 16.

All-PSAC Honors: PSAC Champion Slippery Rock led all schools in the league with seven selections to the All-PSAC team, which was headlined by Noreen Herlihy being named the Coach of the Year. Lucy Hannon, Emer Flatley and Dana O'Neill were named to the first team. Shelby Ward, Leslie Henny and Lauren Impey were named to the second team and Izabel Scott was named to the third team.

West Chester had four selections, headlined by first team picks Melissa McKeary and Noelle Harner. Jennifer Hutchinson made the second team and Shannon Fedyk was named to the third team.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the game with an overall record of 14-5-3 and is riding a six game unbeaten streak. The Rock's 14 wins give them their 17th consecutive winning season with 10 or more victories, the eighth-best streak in Division II history.

Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 45-18 and outshooting the opposition 299-210. Lucy Hannon leads the way with 10 goals and 10 assists, followed by Shelby Ward with nine goals and three assists. Cailin Conner has five goals and three assists, while Lauren Impey has four goals and three assists and Stephanie Buckenheimer has three goals and four assists to cap the top scorers. Crysta Ganter has three goals, including the game-winner over Cal in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Dana O'Neill is 14-5-3 with 10 shutouts in goal, including shutouts in the PSAC semifinal, title game and NCAA second round. She has allowed 18 goals for a 0.80 goals against average and made 78 saves for a .812 save percentage. O'Neill has also played more minutes in goal this season than any goalkeeper in the nation.

Scouting the Golden Rams: West Chester enters the game with an overall record of 14-4-1 and lost the two games prior to the second round win over West Virginia Wesleyan. The Golden Rams have the advantage of rest on their side, having played three games less than Slippery Rock since the PSAC quarterfinal match two weeks ago.

West Chester is outscoring opponents 47-14 and outshooting the opposition 354-136. Melissa McKeary leads the team with 10 goals and five assists, while Marie D'Angelo has added six goals and five assists and Ashley Saylor has added five goals and four assists. Jen Hutchinson has six goals and one assist and Carly Yost caps the top scorers with five goals and one assist.

Shannon Fedyk has started every game in goal this season and is 14-4-1 with nine shutouts. She has allowed 14 goals for a goals against average of 0.73 and has made 63 saves for a .818 save percentage.

Head Coaches: Noreen Herlihy is in her 18th season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program and was named the 2012 PSAC Coach of the Year. She has led the team to 17 consecutive winning seasons with 10 or more wins and owns a career record of 222-102-26. The 17 consecutive winning seasons rank eighth all-time in Division II history. Herlihy is a 1992 graduate of Mercyhurst College with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine. She also owns a master's degree in sports administration from Slippery Rock.

Betty Ann Kempf Townsley is in her sixth season as the head coach at West Chester, where she has led the team to a record of 94-15-15 during her tenure to become the school's all-time winningest coach. She has led the team to the Atlantic Region title twice and has taken the team to the NCAA Round of 16 twice as well.

Series: Slippery Rock owns a 16-10-4 advantage in the all-time series, but the teams have split two meetings this year, both at West Chester. The Golden Rams battled back to earn a slim overtime win during the regular season before Slippery Rock eliminated them from the PSAC playoffs in the quarterfinals.

Playoff Rivalry: Slippery Rock has eliminated West Chester from the PSAC playoffs in the quarterfinals each of the last two seasons after the Golden Rams claimed the league title in 2010.

Last Time: (Box Score) Slippery Rock took advantage of its scoring chances and used a smothering defensive effort to defeat West Chester 2-1 in the opening round of the PSAC playoffs Nov. 1.

Cailin Conner scored in the 16th minute and Shelby Ward added a goal in the 56th minute to put The Rock up 2-0.

The Rock defense held West Chester off the board until there were just 55 seconds remaining when Carly Yost scored off a rebound that hit the post. Neither team would generate a shot in the final 55 seconds.

Dana O'Neill earned the win with three saves for SRU, while Shannon Fedyk took the loss with three saves for WCU.
