Rock and West Chester renew playoff rivalry Thursday

For the first time in a decade, Slippery Rock and West Chester will meet with neither team ranked in the nation's top-25 when they square off Thursday in the PSAC quarterfinals at WCU.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will travel to West Chester for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference quarterfinal match at 1 p.m. Thursday.

Rankings: For the first time in at least 10 years, Slippery Rock and West Chester will meet with neither team ranked among the nation's top-25 after the Golden Rams fell from No. 7 to out of the polls last week. West Chester is currently in position to earn an NCAA playoff berth. The NCAA selection committee ranked West Chester No. 1 in the region and SRU No. 7 this week, with the top six teams earning a berth.

Playoff Picture: West Chester saw its regular season title and No. 1 seed slip away when it was upset by Millersville in the regular season finale. California claimed the top seed with West Chester sliding in at No. 2. Gannon earned the third seed, followed by Edinboro, Kutztown, East Stroudsburg, Slippery Rock and Indiana.

The winner of the SRU-WCU match will play the winner of the Gannon-ESU match Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the highest reamaining seed. The winners of the IUP-Cal match and the Kutztown-Edinboro match will play at 11 a.m. Saturday. The championship game will be played Sunday at noon at the highest remaining seed.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the game with a 10-5-2 overall record and a 7-5-2 PSAC mark. A 3-0 win at Lock Haven in the regular season finale gave SRU its 17th consecutive winning season with at least 10 wins, the eighth-best streak in Division II history.

Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 35-16 and outshooting the opposition 219-154. Lucy Hannon leads the way with eight goals and six assists, followed by Shelby Ward with six goals and three assists. Lauren Impey and Stephanie Buckenheimer each have three goals and three assists, while Cailin Conner and Nicole Krueger each have three goals to cap the top scorers.

Dana O'Neill is 10-5-2 with seven shutouts in goal. She has allowed 16 goals for a 0.92 goals against average and made 55 saves for a .775 save percentage.

Scouting the Golden Rams: West Chester enters the game with an overall record of 13-3-1 and a PSAC mark of 10-3-1. The Golden Rams were poised to take over the top rank in the nation just a few weeks ago, but have closed the season with three losses in their last five matches and fallen out of the rankings. Among those losses were games against Lock Haven and Millersville, both of which missed the PSAC playoffs.

West Chester is outscoring opponents 45-12 and outshooting the opposition 332-127. Mellis McKeary leads the team with 10 goals and five assists, while Marie D'Angelo has added six goals and four assists and Ashley Saylor has added five goals and four assists. Jen Hutchinson has six goals and one assist and Carly Yost caps the top scored with four goals and one assist.

Shannon Fedyk has started every game in goal this season and is 13-3-1 with eight shutouts. She has allowed 12 goals for a goals against average of 0.69 and has made 58 saves for a .829 save percentage.

Head Coaches: Noreen Herlihy is in her 18th season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. She has led the team to 17 consecutive winning seasons with 10 or more wins and owns a career record of 221-102-26. The 17 consecutive winning seasons rank eighth all-time in Division II history. Herlihy is a 1992 graduate of Mercyhurst College with a bachelor's degree in sports medicine. She also owns a master's degree in sports administration from Slippery Rock.

Betty Ann Kempf Townsley is in her sixth season as the head coach at West Chester, where she has led the team to a record of 93-14-15 during her tenure to become the school's all-time winningest coach. She has led the team to the Atlantic Region title twice and has taken the team to the NCAA Round of 16 twice as well.

Series: Slippery Rock owns a 15-10-4 advantage in the all-time series.

Playoff Rematch: Slippery Rock eliminated West Chester from the PSAC playoffs last season in the quarterfinal round with a 1-0 win at SRU. West Chester was the defending champion after edging Slippery Rock in a shootout in the semifinals in 2010 at WCU.

Last Time: (Box Score) Then second-ranked West Chester rallied from a late 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 overtime win over Slippery Rock Oct. 9 in West Chester.

Emer Flatley scored a penalty kick in the 67th minute to put SRU up 1-0, but Melissa McKeary tied the game in the 79th minute to send it to overtime. In the extra session, West Chester capitalized on a breakaway chance and Jen Hutchinson ended the game with 2:10 to play in the first overtime.

Slippery Rock posted a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second period and overtime, but could not find the net.

Shannon Fedyk earned the win with four saves for WCU, while Dana O'Neill took the loss with five saves for SRU.
