Rock hosts defending champion Millersville Saturday

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team will host Millersville Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at 1 p.m. at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Scouting The Rock: Slippery Rock enters the game with a 6-2-5 overall record and a 2-2-2 mark in PSAC games. The Rock has posted three consecutive shutouts and is coming off a 2-0 win at West Chester Tuesday.

Slippery Rock is outscoring opponents 26-13 and outshooting the opposition 218-160. The Rock scored just 24 goals in 17 games last year. Stephen Donnelly leads the team with five goals and one assist, while Chris Davis and Michael Ramirez each have four goals and one assist. Mike Roopchandsingh has two goals and three assists and Joshua Gray and Brandon Chiu each have two goals and two assists to cap the top scorers.

Clayton Master has started 11 games in goal for SRU and is 5-2-5 with five shutouts. He has allowed 11 goals for a goals against average of 0.85 and has made 48 saves for a .814 save percentage. Master was this week's PSAC Athlete of the Week.

Scouting the Marauders: Millersville is the defending PSAC champion and brings a 6-6 overall record and a 3-2 PSAC mark into the game. The Marauders are coming off a 2-0 win over Lock Haven Tuesday.

Millersville has matched opponents with 21 goals this season and is outshooting the opposition 181-151. The Marauders are led by Jeramey Robbins with four goals and three assists, while Jaime Vazquez has four goals and two assists and Matt Kodoch has four goals and one assist. William Taylor, with three goals and two assists, is the only other player with more than one goal. Andrew Dukes leads the team with five assists.

Chris Schneider has played the majority of minutes in goal and is 2-5 with one shutout, a 1.90 goals against average and a .690 save percentage. Brad Benzing has made four starts, is 3-1, has a 1.26 goals against average and a .739 save percentage.

Head Coaches: Michael Bonelli is in his third season at the helm of the Slippery Rock program. Bonelli has posted a record of 24-17-8 in his three seasons, including an 11-7-1 mark and a berth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs in 2010. Prior to his time at SRU, Bonelli spent five seasons as an assistant coach at the Division I level, with stints at Northwestern and Lafayette. He received a bachelor's degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland in 2004.

Steve Widdowson is in his sixth season as the head coach at Millersville, where he has quickly turned the team into an annual contender. Widdowson took the team to a No. 1 national ranking in 2009 before suffering a 2-1 defeat to Slippery Rock in the PSAC title game. In 2011, he led the team back to the title game, this time earning the first win for the program. He then went on to lead the team to the NCAA Division II semifinals.

Series History: Slippery Rock and Millersville have met 21 times with both teams winning an equal number to post a 10-10-1 record in the series.

Last Meeting: (Box Score) Millersville scored two first half goals and never looked back on the way to a 2-0 win over SRU Sept. 7, 2011 in Millersville.

Pat Baffuto and Eric Pepper scored goals for the Marauders and Brad Benzing earned a shutout with thee saves in goal.

Millersville finished with advantages of 18-6 in total shots, 7-3 in shots on goal and 5-3 in corner kicks.
