Box Score
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – West Virginia Wesleyan's Aliesha Rees scored off a rebound with 41 seconds left in the first overtime to lead the Bobcats to a 2-1 upset over the 24th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team in non-conference action Monday at Thompson Stadium.
The Rock (1-1) outshot the Bobcats (2-0) by a 20-10 margin, but a fluky goal late in the game and the rebound in overtime proved to be enough for the visitors.
Scoreless through the first 79 minutes of regulation, it appeared as if Slippery Rock had broke the tie when Kara Mullins had a shot off a corner kick that West Virginia Wesleyan keeper Caroline Lalley bobbled and fell back into the net with, but no goal was signaled as the referees deemed that she managed to keep the ball from crossing the goal line.
The visitors turned that momentum swing into the first goal of the game in the 84th minute when Rock keeper Lisa Rodgers came out of the net to kick away a long pass down the middle of the field. She slid and kicked the ball, which deflected off the shin guards of Rachel Ritchey and ricocheted nearly 30 yards back into an empty net.
A resilient Rock team pushed forward and found the equalizer with just 1:22 left on the clock. Izabel Scott carried the ball down the right wing and sent a crossing pass into the box, where the ball deflected off a Wesleyan defender and found the left corner of the net. She was credited with the first goal of her collegiate career.
Mullins had a decent look in the fourth minute of overtime, but Lalley made the stop to keep the game going. A Slippery Rock foul called with just over a minute to play in the opening period of extra time gave the Bobcats a free kick from just inside midfield. Zania Thomas sent the kick into the box, where Rees shot a hard low line drive that was kicked away by Rodgers. The rebound came straight back to Rees, however, who found the right side of the net on her second attempt to end the game.
Lalley earned the win in goal for the Bobcats, recording five saves and allowing one goal. Rodgers took the loss after allowing two goals and recording six saves.
Slippery Rock finished the match with advantages of 20-10 in total shots and 5-2 in corner kicks, while Wesleyan posted an 8-6 edge in shots on goal.
Monday's loss was the first for Slippery Rock in its last 17 games, snapping a streak that began last fall and included the 2011 season opening win over Seton Hill. Before Monday, SRU's last defeat came Sept. 24, 2010 against California (Pa.).
The Rock will look to refocus heading into the start of conference play, which begins Wednesday on the road at Millersville. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. and live statistics, audio and video (fee required) links will be available at www.millersvilleathletics.com.
