CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win on the road at the University of Charleston Tuesday afternoon in a matchup of Atlantic Region rivals.
Shelby Ward scored the game's lone goal in the 83rd minute to lead The Rock (4-3-2) to the win in what marked the team's fifth consecutive road game.
The two teams played to a nearly even game statistically speaking, with each team registering nine total shots and five shots on goal. Slippery Rock edged Charleston (3-3-1) 6-2 in corner kicks.
Ward's game-winner came from in front of the net as she put it past Golden Eagle keeper Catherine Perry off a crossing pass from
Izabel Scott at the 82:44 mark.
Dana O'Neill earned the shutout in goal for Slippery Rock, stopping all five shots on goal. Perry took the loss, allowing one goal and recording four saves.
Charleston finished the first half with a slim 5-4 edge in shot attempts, but The Rock controlled the possession for much of the half, posting a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. O'Neill made three saves in the first half and two in the second to preserve the shutout.
Slippery Rock will return home for the first time since Sept. 10 when it welcomes Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg this weekend for a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matches. The Rock and Bloomsburg will square off Friday at 1 p.m., with the East Stroudsburg match set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
