KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Kutztown University women's soccer team scored with 1:02 remaining in regulation to hand Slippery Rock University a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Saturday at Keystone Arena.
The Rock (3-3-2, 2-2-2 PSAC) kept fighting after the goal, getting two shots off in the final minute, but Kutztown (6-2-0, 4-1-0 PSAC) was able to make the goal stand.
After the two teams played a nearly even game into the 89th minute, Carolynne Kahl scored on a second opportunity off a corner kick at the 88:58 mark to propel the Golden Bears to the win.
The two teams were even in total shot attempts with nine each and the hosts managed slim advantages of 5-3 in shots on goal and 7-6 in corner kick attempts.
Shelby Ward had two chances in the final 32 seconds of the game, but Kuztown keeper Casey Behrendt made one save and a last ditch effort sailed high.
Kara Mullins and
Lucy Hannon each added three shots to lead the offensive effort.
Lisa Rodgers took the loss in goal after recording three saves. The Rock defense was also credited with a team save. Behrendt earned the shutout with three saves.
Kutztown was able to withstand a strong start from Slippery Rock as the visitors registered the first four shots of the game and held the Golden Bears without a single shot until the 35th minute. The Rock owned a 4-2 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The hosts played a clean second half, being whistled for just three fouls, to post a 7-5 edge in total shots and a 4-2 advantage in corners in the period.
Slippery Rock will wrap up its five-game road trip with a noon game at the University of Charleston Sept. 27. The Rock returns home for the first time since Sept. 10 when they host Bloomsburg in a PSAC match Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.
