Men’s soccer downs West Chester, 2-1

The Slippery Rock University men’s soccer team began PSAC play with a 2-1 win over West Chester Saturday at Thompson Stadium. The victory improved The Rock’s overall record to 2-1 on the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team began Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 win over West Chester Saturday at Thompson Stadium. The victory improved The Rock's overall record to 2-1 on the season.

Junior defender Drew Donoghue and senior forward Kenneth Fultz were responsible for The Rock's two goals. Junior midfielder Cody Clark and freshman forward Christopher Davis assisted on Slippery Rock's scores.

Junior goalkeeper Timothy White earned the victory after stopping three shots and allowing just one penalty kick goal.

West Chester's Neil Gallaher scored the Golden Ram's (1-3, 0-1 PSAC) lone goal. Goalkeeper Kevin Marron suffered the loss for West Chester after allowing two goals and recording three saves.

For the game, WCU held a 10-8 advantage in total shots and Slippery Rock posted a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Both schools recorded three corners each.

Donoghue scored off of Clark's corner kick at the 14:00 mark in the first half to put Slippery Rock up 1-0. West Chester tied the game when Gallagher beat White on a penalty kick in the 21st minute after The Rock was called for a foul inside the box. The two teams headed into halftime with the score tied at 1-1.

Fultz scored the game-winning goal in the 64th minute when he took a crossing pass from Davis and beat Marron with a strike to the lower right corner. The Rock's defense kept WCU scoreless for the remainder of the game to hold onto the 2-1 victory.

Slippery Rock will hit the road for a pair of PSAC games next weekend, starting with a matchup at 4:30 p.m. Friday at California (Pa.) followed by a Saturday showdown at Shippensburg.
