Men's PSAC Championship Preview
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Slippery Rock University will host the 2011 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 12-14 at the Bill Lennox Track Complex.

Some of the best track and field athletes in the nation will compete at SRU during the three-day meet, which will kick off Thursday with finals in the hammer throw and 10,000-meter run and the opening day of competition in the multi-events.

No admission will be charged Thursday, but admission for Friday and Saturday is set at $7 per day for adults and $2 per day for students. All students from PSAC institutions will be admitted free with a valid ID.

Two-time defending champion Shippensburg will enter the meet as the favorite to win its seventh outdoor title in the last nine years. The Red Raiders claimed the 2010 title by just four points over East Stroudsburg, while Lock Haven finished third and Slippery Rock came in fourth.

Entering the final week leading up to the 2011 conference championships, Shippensburg was ranked first in the Atlantic Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. St. Augustine's slotted in second, followed by Lock Haven, Johnson C. Smith, Kutztown, Slippery Rock and East Stroudsburg rounding out the top-seven.

The top story line outside of the team competition will be the return of 11 individual event champions from a year ago.

Highlighting the list of returning event winners is last year's Most Outstanding Track Athlete, Negus Graham of East Stroudsburg. Graham will enter this year's meet with the top-time in the 400-meter dash at 48.00 seconds and the second-best time in the 200-meter dash at 21.80 seconds, trailing only his teammate Ian Melhorn's 21.66 second performance.

Slippery Rock leads all schools with three returning event winners. Chris Warning won the discus last season and will enter this year's meet with the top mark in the PSAC in both the discus (51.68 meters) and the hammer (59.87m). Brady Wert won the decathlon last year and will enter the meet as the favorite again this year, currently with the top score in the league (6,176 points). Kevin Jewel claimed the 800-meter title as a freshman last season, and like Warning and Wert, will enter this year's meet with the best time in the league (1:51.19).

Shippensburg is the only other school with more than one returning champion. The Red Raiders return Sean Stetler, who won the 10,000m last year, and Bryan Beegle, who won the 5,000m last season.

Stetler will enter this year's meet ranked second in the 10,000m (29:44.64) and fourth in the 5,000m (14:27.14). Lock Haven's Alex Monroe leads the league in the 10,000m at 29:42.33.

Beegle ranks 11th in the 5,000m (14:40.01) this season, which Edinboro's Ben Hahn is the favorite in at 14:14. Beegle will also enter the PSAC meet ranked second in the 1,500-meter run at 3:49.11. His own Shippensburg teammate Matt Gillette leads the league at 3:48.24.

Joining East Stroudsburg's Graham with one returning champion are West Chester, California, Edinboro, Indiana and Lock Haven.

West Chester returns long jump champion Leighon Johnson, who ranks 14th in the event this season with a leap of 6.71 meters. Shippensburg's Herman Kirkland leads the league at 7.64m, while Nafee Harris of Indiana ranks second at 7.57m. Kirkland also leads the league in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 10.56 seconds.

California's Brice Myers will attempt to defend his title in the 110-meter hurdles. He will enter the meet as the favorite with a time of 14.16 seconds.

Jason Borst of Edinboro will return to defend his crown in the 400-meter hurdles. He enters the meet ranked eighth at 54.65 seconds. Jared Long of Indiana ranks first at 52.96 seconds.

Indiana's Leander Toney will look to repeat as champion in the high jump. He enters the meet as the favorite with a clearance of 2.15 meters, the only PSAC athlete to clear seven feet this season.

The final returning champion is Lock Haven's Nick Hilton in the steeplechase. He enters the meet as a clear-cut favorite to repeat with a time of 9:01.33, which is 13 seconds faster than his own teammate Mitch Miller, who ranks second.

Both relay events, the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter, will be closely contested battles. Shippensburg owns the top seed in the 4x100m at 40.95 seconds, followed by ESU at 41.17 and Lock Haven at 41.86.

LHU owns the top-seed in the 4x400m at 3:16.52, but three other schools have posted a time within two seconds of that performance. ESU ranks second at 3:16.70, followed by Kutztown at 3:17.25 and Slippery Rock at 3:18.46.

Among the events that will crown a new champion this year is the pole vault, where a head-to-head showdown is expected between Justin Germani of Kutztown and Cameron Daugherty of Slippery Rock. Germani has cleared 5.07 meters this season, while Daugherty has cleared 5.06 meters. Both rank among the nation's best.

The triple jump is another event that will see a new champion this year. Brandon Hillman of East Stroudsburg comes in as the favorite with a leap of 15.04 meters.

The final events that will crown new champions this year are the shot put and the javelin. Shippensburg's Steve D'Arcy will be the favorite in the shot put with a toss of 15.67 meters, while East Stroudsburg's Josh Hontz will be the top seed in the javelin with a throw of 64.91 meters.
