SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team clinched a conference playoff berth and posted its eighth consecutive shutout Tuesday with a 1-0 win over Mansfield in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference match at Egli Field.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves its season record to 11-3-2 overall and 8-2-2 in PSAC action. The win also gives SRU 26 points and moves it into a tie with California for second-place in the PSAC, one spot behind Kutztown. The top-eight teams in the league standings qualify for the playoffs.
Slippery Rock also pushed its current shutout streak to 721:02 since last allowing a goal. The team has allowed just one goal in the last 908:02 of action.
Mansfield, which dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-11 in league play, packed its defense into the box and made it difficult for SRU to score, despite The Rock posting an 18-3 advantage in total shots.
Slippery Rock scored the lone goal of the match in the first half when
Lucy Hannon found the lower left corner of the net off an assist from
Shelby Ward at the 21:37 mark. The goal was the team-leading ninth of the season for Hannon, while Ward's assist was also a team-best ninth helper on the year.
The Rock finished the first half with advantages of 10-1 in total shots and 4-0 in shots on goal, while Mansfield managed a 3-2 edge in corner kick attempts.
Neither team could find the net in the second half, with Slippery Rock posting advantages of 8-2 in total shots and 2-0 in shots on goal. Both teams were awarded with one corner kick.
SRU finished the game with advantages of 18-3 in total shots and 6-0 in shots on goal, while the Mountaineers maintained a 4-3 edge in corners.
Lisa Rodgers earned the shutout in goal for Slippery Rock, lowering her goals against average to just 0.45.
Alana Krieger took the loss in goal for Mansfield, allowing one goal and recording five saves.
Slippery Rock will close the regular season with home games on consecutive Saturdays, welcoming Gannon Oct. 22 for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff before Lock Haven visits Egli Field Oct. 29 for a 2:30 p.m. match.
Wins in both of those games will guarantee The Rock a top-four seed in the PSAC playoffs and an opening round home game.
