SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team earned its seventh consecutive shutout with a 3-0 victory over Wheeling Jesuit Saturday morning at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 10-3-2 overall, giving head coach
Noreen Herlihy her 16th consecutive season with 10 or more wins. Wheeling Jesuit drops to 3-8-0 overall.
Saturday's game, which was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. and was moved to a 10 a.m. start, was all Slippery Rock from the start. The Rock finished the game with advantages of 20-1 in total shots, 10-0 in shots on goal and 8-3 in corner kicks.
Kara Mullins and
Stephanie Buckenheimer each tallied goals and
Emer Flatley and
Shelby Ward both registered assists to lead SRU. The third and final goal of the game was credited as an own goal, as a Wheeling defender headed the ball into their goal.
Saturday's shutout ran Slippery Rock's current streak of time without allowing a goal to an impressive 631:02. The team has given up just one goal in its last 818:02 of action.
Dana O'Neill was credited with the shutout to improve her season record to 5-0 with four shutouts, although she was not required to make a save in the game. Her counterpart, Jennifer Fletcher from Wheeling Jesuit, dropped to 3-8 after allowing three goals and recording seven saves.
Mullins scored the game's opening goal, her eighth of the season, in the 32nd minute when she headed in a corner kick off the foot of Flatley.
The 1-0 margin stood until the halftime break, with Slippery Rock holding a 9-0 edge in total shots.
Buckenheimer added an insurance goal in the 54th minute after she took a pass from Ward in the center of the field and found the upper left corner of the net for her seventh goal of the season.
The final goal came in the 59th minute when Flatley sent a free kick into the box and a Wheeling Jesuit defender headed the ball into the goal when trying to clear it.
Saturday's game was the final non-conference game of the regular season for The Rock, which will close the season with three home Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference matches.
Mansfield will visit Egli Field Oct. 18 for a 3 p.m. game, followed by Gannon visiting Oct. 22 and Lock Haven coming to town Oct. 29.
