WEST CHESTER, Pa. --
Mitchell Walters scored an unassisted goal in the 72nd minute to give the 11th-ranked Slippery Rock University men's soccer team a 1-0 win over West Chester in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.
The Rock (3-0-1, 2-0-0 PSAC) controlled the flow of the game, allowing West Chester (2-2-0, 0-2-0 PSAC) just one shot on goal in the win.
Slippery Rock finished the game with advantages of 13-3 in total shots and 7-1 in shots on goal, while maintaining a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
West Chester played the final 74 minutes of the game with 10 players after a red card was issued to Conor Malarney in the 16th minute.
Walters' goal was his second game-winning tally of the season after also scoring the winner against Washington Adventist in the season opener.
Kenneth Fultz tallied a team-high six shots for Slippery Rock, including two on target. Walters and
Tynan Smith each added two shots on goal and
Drew Donoghue had one shot on goal to account for The Rock's seven shots on target.
Andrew Solimeo had West Chester's only shot on goal.
Greg Blum was credited with the win in goal for SRU, recording one save. Peter Weiss took the loss for West Chester, allowing one goal and recording six saves.
The Rock returns home Tuesday, Sept. 14, for a non-conference match against Shepherd University. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
