#7 Millersville nips Rock, 1-0, in NCAA regional final

A goal in the 18th minute of action Sunday denied SRU (14-7-1) a first-ever regional title

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. -- Seventh-ranked Millersville scored a goal in the 18th minute of action Sunday afternoon and made the tally stand up for a 1-0 win over The Rock in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional final on the Marauders' home turf.

Sean McLaughlin scored off assists from Thomas Bargmann and Ryan Kiley to send the Marauders (18-3) into national quarterfinal action next week.

The loss gave The Rock, which made its first-ever appearance in an NCAA regional final, a final season record of 14-7-1.

This year's win total equalled the second-best mark in school history set by the 1975 team (14-3 final record) and trailed only a 17-1-1 mark recorded by Hall of Fame coach Jim Egli's 1974 squad.

The double-digit win total was the fourth recorded by Matt Thompson's program in the last five seasons; only 14 SRU squads since 1934 have won 10 or more games.

The Rock outshot Millersville by an 11-6 margin Sunday but could not put a shot in the back of the net against Marauders goalie Matt Langione.

Rock sophomore goalie Greg Blum turned aside three of four shots on goal by Millersville.

The Rock will now turn its attention to offseason workouts and preparations for the 2009 season. Next fall's squad will return all but one player, senior midfielder Patrick Cormac, from this fall's team.

Cormac was one of four Rock players named to all-tournament honors in this year's regional competition. He was joined on that elite list by sophomore midfielder Toby Bowser, junior forward Jeremy Deighton and freshman midfielder Anthony Paganie.

Bowser had one of the two assists on Deighton's game-winning overtime goal last Friday vs. #14 East Stroudsburg to tie the school record (15) for helpers. Deighton's goal was his 15th of the season, which is tied for sixth place on The Rock's single-season goals scored list.
