Â
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The undefeated Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team climbed three spots to No. 4 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national rankings and stayed at No. 3 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine national rankings in the final set of regular season rankings from both organizations.
Â
Slippery Rock climbed three places from No. 7 in recent weeks to the highest ranking in program history in the IWLCA poll at No. 4 this week. The Rock have been ranked no lower than No. 11 in every poll released by the IWLCA this year, which is the poll widely used as the official national ranking during the season. SRU opened the year at No. 5 in the USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll and climbed to No. 3, where the team stayed for nine straight weeks. Neither poll will announce any additional changes until the final rankings for the season are unveiled after the NCAA Tournament.
Â
SRU earned its spot in the top five of both national polls after posting the best record in the country for any collegiate women's lacrosse team at any level with a 20-0 record. The Rock capped a perfect regular season with a 17-0 record and claimed the first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title in program history with wins over Shippensburg, No. 10 West Chester and No. 15 Kutztown in the PSAC Tournament last week.
Â
Slippery Rock is one of only two NCAA Division II teams with a perfect record entering the NCAA Tournament, joining No. 1 Flagler (19-0). There are no undefeated teams in Division I and only two in Division III (18-0 Middlebury, 17-0 Salisbury), giving the NCAA just four total women's lacrosse teams across all three divisions with unbeaten records entering their respective NCAA Tournaments. The NAIA also has one undefeated team in Benedictine (16-0), marking just five total undefeated collegiate women's lacrosse teams.
Â
The Rock rank first nationally in scoring defense (5.40 goals per game), 11th in scoring offense (16.35 goals per game) and fifth in scoring margin (+10.95 goals per game).
Â
Slippery Rock is the highest ranked team from the Atlantic Region in both national polls and is one of three teams from the region to finish in the top 10 in the IWLCA poll. East Stroudsburg will enter the postseason ranked No. 7, while West Chester stayed at No. 10 this week.
Â
Kutztown moved up two places to No. 13 this week after making a run to the PSAC title game. Wingate held steady at No. 16 after winning the South Atlantic Conference title. Those two teams will meet at SRU Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament with the winner advancing to play SRU in round two Saturday. Seton Hill finished the season ranked No. 22 to give the Atlantic Region six teams in the final top 25.
Â
Slippery Rock earned the top seed in the region in the NCAA Tournament and will have a first round bye before hosting either No. 4 seed Kutztown or No. 5 seed Wingate in round two Saturday at 1 p.m.
