LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University women's basketball coach Ryenn Micaletti was announced Monday as one of the winners of the inaugural L.P. Hill Unity in Sports Award presented by the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

The award recognizes the contributions of an individual or group on each member campus that, through intercollegiate athletics, epitomizes the promise of unity, equity and access for all.

The award is named after Leslie Pinckney Hill, the first president of Cheyney State Teacher's College. From 1913 to 1950, he was the principal of the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia and oversaw its establishment as Cheyney State Teachers College.  The Phi Beta Kappa, Harvard-educated son of a former slave taught at Tuskegee Institute and was a renowned educator, writer, poet and community leader.

In 1927, a year after the first documents that created the Pennsylvania State Normal School Athletic Association, Mr. Hill argued for the inclusion of Cheyney in the Association's bylaws after Cheyney had been left out in the initial drafting. The Board of Principals immediately rectified this error and all 14 state-owned institutions were then included in the Association's initial governing documents.

Micaletti joins a group of distinguished honorees from across the PSAC in the inaugural class of award winners. She is one of just two coaches to be recognized, joining Clarion swimming coach Brehan Kelly.

"Ryenn is a true team player," said Roberta Page, SRU director of athletics. "Not only in the way she leads and models excellence on the court, but in how she continually broadens the very definition of team. She brings people in, creates space for every voice, and encourages those around her to strive for more. Her commitment extends beyond the present moment; she shows up for future athletes as well, investing her time, energy and passion into building a stronger, more inclusive community for the next generation."

Micaletti is currently in her third season leading the Slippery Rock women's basketball team as head coach, where she has overseen a program that has stood out on the SRU campus for its academic performance and team unity.

The Rock women's basketball team has posted above a 3.40 GPA in each of the first two years under Micaletti with five players earning CSC Academic All-District honors and 22 players being named as PSAC Scholar-Athletes.

Micaletti earns high marks on campus for the way the women's basketball team celebrates the diversity and backgrounds of its players. The team routinely also supports other events and groups on campus, including attending events sponsored by the Women's Center and the President's Commission on Gender Equity & Expression and Sexual Orientation.

The Rock women's basketball team has hosted Black History Month games in each of the last two years and will host another in February this year. The team also hosted the first-ever Pride Game at SRU.

In addition to her efforts to support diversity on campus, Micaletti and the women's basketball team have also worked hard to support inclusion at The Rock. The team has worked with the adapted physical activity club on campus to attend and play in wheelchair basketball events and volunteers at the annual Weekend of Welcome event at SRU to help new students and their families feel welcomed when they arrive on campus for the first time.

Micaletti also runs a program called "Coaches to Class and Professors to Practice." Each coach on her staff attends a class with one of the student-athletes. In return, members of the SRU faculty are invited to attend practice, giving the coaches better insight into the academic experience and the faculty better insight into the student-athlete experience.

Micaletti is also a member of the Black Faculty and Staff Association on campus.
