Rock to continue PSAC West play vs. Clarion, SHU, IUP

The Slippery Rock softball team will continue its double round-robin play through the PSAC West with three doubleheaders at Clarion 12 p.m., Friday, vs. Seton Hill University 1 p.m. Saturday and vs. Indiana University (Pa.) 2 p.m. Tuesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University softball team will continue its double round-robin play through the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division with three doubleheaders beginning at Clarion 12 p.m. Friday. The Rock will host Seton Hill University 1 p.m. Saturday and Indiana University (Pa.) 2 p.m. Tuesday at Kasnevich Field. 
 
The doubleheader against Clarion was moved from 2 p.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, it was announced March 27. Game two will start at approximately 2 p.m.
 
The Rock are looking to ride their four-game win streak, now at 8-12 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC West after sweeping Wheeling University and Pitt-Johnstown last week.
 
The Golden Eagles of Clarion will play their second series at home against The Rock, beginning the series with a 6-14 record, including a 2-2 record in the PSAC West.
 
The Seton Hill Griffins starts the week with a 14-6 mark on the season that includes a 3-3 entrance into PSAC West play.

The Indiana Crimson Hawks begin the week 16-6 overall with a 7-1 record in PSAC West play.

SERIES HISTORY vs. CLARION
The Rock and the Golden Eagles will be meeting for the 115th and 116th times Friday, as Slippery Rock looks to improve upon an 73-41 all-time record versus Clarion. The two sides most recently played a four-game last year, with Slippery Rock taking three wins including an 10-2 decision on the road.
 
SRU is 32-22 when traveling to Clarion, splitting the trip last year. Prior to the 10-2 win, The Rock dropped a 12-7 result to the Golden Eagles after Clarion scored five runs in the sixth inning.
 
Through the four games against Clarion last season, The Rock outscored the Golden Eagles 32-27.

Games 130 and 131 in series history will commence next Tuesday, a matchup that the Crimson Hawks lead 79-50 in the all-time series. SRU went 3-1 against IUP last season. LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock earned a 5-1 win in game one over Pitt-Johnstown with a five-run seventh inning and earned another comeback victory in game two by overcoming a three-run deficit in the fourth inning by scoring 14 runs in their last three trips to the plate to rally for a 18-14 win in game two.
 
Alexsa Hurd (5-3) picked up the game one win, throwing 12 strikeouts in 7.0 innings, tied for eighth most strikeouts in a single game in Slippery Rock history, while allowing one run on five hits and four walks. Hurd did it all in game one as she hit her first career grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to put The Rock ahead 4-1. Julia Nutter added an insurance run with an RBI double later in the inning. Game two was highlighted by six Rock batters with multi-hit games including Hurd's 5-of-6 performance with three RBI's, Shaylyn Shall's 2-for-3 with three RBI's and capped off by Nutter's six RBI game with a grand slam.
 
Hurd posted a 6-for-10 day with a home run, seven RBI and three runs. Nutter went 5-for-8 with two home runs, seven RBI and a double, while Shall posted a 3-for-5 day with four RBI, four walks and three runs. Jessica Goldhardt launched a two-run home run in a 2-for-3 game two.
 
Alexa Uphold (2-1) picked up her second win of the season in game two, coming in relief and pitching in 3.0 innings while allowing five runs. While not recording a save, Hurd shut the door in the seventh inning of game two, striking out three of the four batters she faced.
 
LEADING THE ROCK
Emma Kennedy leads SRU in batting average at .357, now 15-for-42 on the season with four RBI. The catcher from Monroeville, Pennsylvania is 6-for-12 in her last four games with three runs and two doubles in that span.
 
Julia Nutter is batting .260 (13-for-50) with three doubles and three home runs, slugging .440. Hurd now leads the high-volume hitters in slugging (.545) with five home runs and four doubles. She is 17-for-66 (.258) overall this season with 52.9 percent of her hits earning at least one extra base.
 
Julia Montie and Arielle Brown are now batting .239 and .209 respectively with six doubles combined (Monite – 4, Brown – 2). The duo has combined for 11 RBI and 25 hits. Arielle Brown leads the high-volume batters with a .424 on-base percentage.
 
Of all batters on the team, Sydney Brown and Naomi Childs lead the way each hitting .400 (5-for-11 and 8-for-20). Sydney Brown has the team's only two triples on the year as well as five RBI. Shaylyn Shall has gone 16-for-41 this year for a .390 batting average that includes four doubles and nine RBI.
 
THE BULLPEN REPORT
Hurd (5-3, 1) has now racked up 89 strikeouts in 62.2 innings, ranking seventh in Division II with 9.9 Ks per seven innings. Her 89 total strikeouts stack up second in the PSAC. Through 10 starts and six complete games, Hurd has tallied a team-best 2.57 ERA.
 
Paige Gresgott (0-6) got the game two start against Pitt-Johnstown and tossed one strikeout in 2.0 innings, now with 3s Ks on the year in 43.0 innings pitched. She has also started nine 10 in the circle with a 5.53 ERA.
 
Mackenzie Borkovich pitched against the Mountain Cats, walking two batters in 0.1 innings. Borkovich is up to six strikeouts in 12.2 innings and has a 3.87 ERA on the year.
 
Kayla Williams (1-2) gave up two runs in 0.2 innings with one strikeout, while Alexa Uphold (2-1) earned the game two win while pitching 3.0 innings.
 
As a team, Slippery Rock's bullpen has totaled 7.07 strikeouts per seven innings, good enough to rank fourth in the conference and 18th in the nation.

HOW GRAND
Hurd and Nutter launched the first two grand slams for Slippery Rock since 2022 when Mackenzie Freeman hit one against Saint Michael's College. These are the lone three grand slams for The Rock since 2018. It is the first time SRU have hit two grand slams in the same doubleheader since 2004. Hurd's slam put Slippery Rock ahead in the seventh inning in game one against UPJ. While Nutter's blast opened the scoring for Slippery Rock in the first inning of game two.
 
EDITING THE RECORD BOOK
Several additions to the single-game record books came about as a result of both SRU victories over Pitt-Johnstown.
 
• The 18-14 win marked the highest-scoring game Rock softball has been involved in since last weekend against Wheeling 15-14. The contest also included a tie for the most runs allowed by SRU in a win.
 
• With 18 runs scored in game two, tied for 10th most in a single-game runs.
 
• Nutter totaled nine bases in game two, tied for fourth most in a single game.
 
• With a 5-for-6 game, Hurd tied for first in single-game hits.
 
• Nutter and Hurd tied a single-game program-high six at-bats.
 
• Slippery Rock recorded 20 hits in the game as a team, tied for third all-time. The team's 42 at-bats tie for fifth.
 
• Hurd struck out 12 batters in game one, tied for eighth in single-game strikeouts.
 
• Nutter hit two home runs in game-two, tied for the most in a single game.

A TOUGH TEAM TO STRIKE OUT
Slippery Rock struck out just eight times between the two games against Pitt-Johnstown, something of a recent trend with SRU's batting. In 20 games, The Rock have been struck out fewer than five times on 10 different occasions.
 
Additionally, Slippery Rock continues PSAC West play on a eight-game streak of having been struck out five times or less.

WALKING ON DOWN
Arielle Brown has been walked 0.75 times per game, ranking third in the PSAC and 26th in Division II. The leadoff batter has amassed a .424 on-base percentage with 12 walks and a .209 batting average (9-for-43).
 
HOME SWEET HOME
Slippery Rock will host their first PSAC West games of the year against Seton Hill. The Rock are 20-12 at home in PSAC West competition over the past two seasons.
 
ROCK STARS OF RECENT
• Slippery Rock batted .476 in game two against Pitt-Johnstown and .290 in game one, the top offensive performance of the season in game two. The Rock combined for three home runs between the two games.
 
• Nutter kept it going with a double and two home runs in the two games against UPJ.
 
• Hurd's 12-strikeout game marked her third straight with 10+ punchouts. She begins the weekend competition with 46 strikeouts in her last 28.0 innings.
 
• Nine different players recorded at least one hit for Slippery Rock in game two. Nine different players also brought at least one run to the plate for The Rock as well.
 
RECORD WATCH
• Hurd is up to 32 career home runs, now just one away from Jenna Geibel's 33 (2010-13) that rank third all-time. Montie is tied with Meghan McHenry (2006-08) for sixth with 21.
 
• Hurd is in sole possession of second all-time with 32 doubles, chasing Stacey Rice (2005-08) for the program lead with 37. Montie is tied for sixth in school history with 27.
 
• Arielle Brown is up to 84 career walks, two away from matching Rice's program-leading 86.
 
• Hurd made her 75th career pitching appearance, passing Lisa Getgen (2006-09) for ninth all-time. She also tied Carly DeRose (2014-17) for seventh with her 28th win.
• With her save in game two against UPJ, Hurd is now tied for third all-time in saves with four others with four saves, one away from Courtney Conron (2004-07) with five.

CLARION SCOUTING REPORT
The Golden Eagles will be playing their second series at home Sunday coming off an upset-split over Seton Hill that ended with a 13-11 win as well as split at IUP March 18.
 
Haylie Rimmey (.345) and Delanie Davison (.339) lead the team at home plate, but Emily Buchleitner (.283) has produced a team-leading 15 RBI on the year. Buchleitner, a junior shortstop from West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, is slugging .517 with three home runs, tied for the team lead with Kathryn O'Horo.
 
Junior Emma Hipps (2-6) of Olanta, Pennsylvania has accumulated a team-leading 6.48 ERA. She has tossed 23 strikeouts in 35.2 innings. Junior Ainsley Perdicaris (3-5) has logged 35 Ks in 44.2 innings with a 6.58 ERA.

SETON HILL SCOUTING REPORT
The Griffins continued PSAC West play with a 8-3 home loss to IUP before dropping game two 17-2 in five innings to the Crimson Hawks. Seton Hill opened PSAC West competition with a sweep of California (Pa.) and a split with Clarion.
 
Seton Hill's offense has been the strength of its team this season, combining for a .544 slugging percentage and .314 batting average, which rank first and fifth in the conference. Brooklyn Fukushima (.463) leads the Griffins' everyday players in batting average, slugging percentage (.806) and on-base percentage (.486).
 
Shelby Telegdy, Bre Athey and Brooke Cleland follow Fukushima in the group of high-volume hitters with a batting average over .315. Telegdy (.362), a freshman from Elizabeth, Pennsylvania also has five home runs and four doubles in the season. Athey (.339), a senior from Queenstown, Maryland is slugging .661 and leads the Griffins with 12 extra base-hits on the year. Cleland (.319), a senior from Manor, Pennsylvania sits third on the team with four home runs.
 
Telegdy (7-4) of has led Seton Hill's pitching staff with a 2.75 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 76.1 innings. Brianha McCombs sits behind Telegdy with a 6.03 ERA. McCombs (3-1) has 33 strikeouts and only 16 walks in 31.1 innings.

IUP SCOUTING REPORT
The Crimson Hawks have been nearly perfect to start PSAC West play a 5-1 record with their lone loss coming against Clarion. IUP proceeded to sweep Gannon and Edinboro University after a split with the Golden Eagles.

IUP has had strong performances from their offense as well as their pitching combining for 7.2 runs per game and a 3.12 ERA that places them third in the conference ranks for both statistics. The Crimson Hawks sport nine different batters with 10 or more RBI. Kendall Young (9-2) is 13th in the PSAC 2.25 ERA. Olivia Hillegas (7-4) has also been a pitching staple for IUP with a 3.71 ERA.
 
Maddie Griffin leads the group of four high-volume hitters batting above .350 with a .392 batting average. A junior from Ligonier, Pennsylvania, Griffin has produced three triples, three doubles and 12 RBI. She has also stolen a team-high nine bases in 10 attempts.
 
Junior Reagan Rand of Harborcreek, Pennsylvania has also bolstered Gannon's .320 team batting average by hitting .362 and racking up a .424 on-base percentage. Rand is slugging .569 this season with a team-high seven doubles and 19 RBI.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Slippery Rock will travel to face California (Pa.) 2:30 p.m. April 4 before returning to Kasnevich Field 1 p.m. April 5 and 2 p.m. April 7 to host Edinboro and Lock Haven respectively.
