Rock to host IUP for Breast Cancer Awareness Game

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team looks for the season-sweep over Indiana (Pa.) during its Breast Cancer Awareness Game Wednesday 7:30 p.m. at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team looks for the season-sweep over Indiana University (Pa.) during its Breast Cancer Awareness Game 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
Slippery Rock enters the match with an 8-3-0 record overall and an 8-1-0 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division, while IUP owns a 10-1-2 overall record with a 7-1-1 record in the PSAC West.

BREAST CANCER AWARENESS GAME
In conjunction with the President's Commission on Women, Slippery Rock is hosting its annual Breast Cancer Awareness Games on Wednesday as part of the field hockey – women's soccer doubleheader at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
A variety of giveaways, raffle baskets and activities have been planned.
 
• At halftime of the women's soccer game there will be a giveaway for pair of AirPods (Only SRU students with a valid SRU ID are eligible to enter).
 
• Gift baskets will be raffled off during both the field hockey and women's soccer games. Items being raffled off currently include:

• PA Breast Cancer Coalition will be in attendance collecting donations as well as providing educational documents.
 
• Luminaries and signs will be available for those who want to honor survivors or those who have lost their battle to breast cancer.
 
• Breast cancer pins and stickers will be given away.
 
• Cookie decorating and hot chocolate available.           
 
NO PETS AT MIHALIK-THOMPSON STADIUM
Fans are reminded that there are NO PETS allowed at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium or in any SRU Athletics facilities. Please do not bring dogs or any other pets to the game. Unless they are a registered service animal, you will be asked to remove your pet from the facility.

Over the past 27 years, Slippery Rock and IUP have played each other 48 times. The matchup has been an annual series since SRU and IUP's inaugural match in 1993. THE FIRST TIME AROUND
In their first meeting this season, The Rock downed the Crimson Hawks on the road 2-0. Abby Paterline opened the scoring in the 16th minute and Lilia Battalini double Slippery Rock's lead in the 20th minute of the opening frame, both goals assisted by Sophia Palermo. The two goals were all that SRU would need as Leah Allman shut the door with a six-save shutout.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-1 win Oct. 18 at Edinboro.
  
Paterline, Bailey McGee and Allie Burns scored one goal each, while Palermo and Sydney Smith grabbed one assist apiece.
 
Marissa Salisbury led SRU with five shots. Paterline (2), McGee (2) and Battalini (2) rounded out the Slippery Rock players with multiple shots.
 
Allman made one save in goal to secure her 29th career victory.
 
SRU finished the game with 14-7 edge in shots and 8-3 in shots on goal, closing out its fourth consecutive win.

PSAC TOURNAMENT BOUND
Slippery Rock clinched a spot in the PSAC Tournament with its 3-1 win over Edinboro and Pitt-Johnstown's 2-1 loss to Clarion on Oct. 18. This is the 15th season in a row that Slippery has made the PSAC Tournament. SRU won two PSAC Championships in that span in 2012 and 2019. No. 7 Gannon University and IUP joined Slippery Rock with clinching victories of their own on Oct. 18. Nobody from the PSAC East has clinched a tournament spot as of today.

STANDINGS CHECK
The match against IUP marks the second game of the second slate of round-robin play in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock sits in second place in the division with 24 points, one point behind No. 7 Gannon for first place. While SRU has already secured a postseason berth, it is still fighting for postseason seeding and a potential division title,
 
SHUTTING THE DOOR
Slippery Rock's stellar defense has been on display during PSAC West action in 2025, as The Rock have five shutouts in their last eight games, while only surrendering five goals in that span.

DEFENDING HOME TURF
Slippery Rock has been perfect so far this season at home as it supports 4-0-0 record at James Egli Field. The Rock will be playing their first home game this season at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
 
LEADING THE ROCK
Salisbury leads The Rock with six goals and 14 points. 12 other Rock players have at least a point so far this season.

Paterline has secured four goals, while Lindsey Price has recorded three markers in 2025, trailing Salisbury by two and three respectively.

Palermo paces Slippery Rock with five assists. Paterline trails Palermo with three assists. Salisbury (2), and McGee (2) are the other two Rock players with multiple. Burns, Irene DolenoBriona Rice and Eden Williams all have one helper.

Salisbury leads the charge in shots with 34. Paterline follows the senior with 23 shots. Palermo and Battalini trail the two forwards with 16 shots apiece.

Lillian Snyder, a crucial part to SRU's backline, leads SRU in minutes with 958. Allman and Libby Zacharyasz trail the defender with 945 and 867 minutes respectively.
 
ALLMAN IN GOAL
Allman has been The Rock's starter for all 11 games so far this season. The junior from Olmsted Township, Ohio has a 8-3-0 record with a .776 save percentage, while allowing 1.05 goals per game. Allman has recorded four shutouts so far this season.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Zacharyasz has been a starter since she arrived at Slippery Rock. In her career, Zacharyasz has started 66 out of the 67 games she has played, including 61 in a row, which has her ranked fifth place in Slippery Rock history for consecutive games started. With a start against IUP, Zacharyasz will move five games behind Sydney Patrick (2020-24) for fourth place on the list.
 
PSAC LEADERS
During Slippery Rock's impressive 2025 season so far, the team has multiple players rank inside the top 10 PSAC categories. Salisbury ranks 10th in the PSAC in total goals with six.

Palermo ranks sixth in the PSAC with two game-winning goals. The two game-winners came in back-to-back games for Palermo against Edinboro and California (Pa.). Palermo is also among the top players in the PSAC in assists. Palermo ranks sixth in the conference in total assists with five and sixth in assists per game with 0.45.
 
During her solid season in goal, Allman has boasted the fifth most shutouts in the PSAC with four clean sheets.
 
REGIONAL RANKINGS
The most recent regional rankings of 2025 have been released by the United Soccer Coaches and The Rock stayed in eighth place in the Atlantic Region. Slippery Rock is one of seven PSAC schools in the rankings. Bloomsburg University, Shepherd University, Kutztown University and West Chester University represent the PSAC East, while No.7 Gannon and IUP join Slippery Rock in representing the PSAC West. HERLIHY ON THE DIVISION II WINS LIST
Slippery Rock head coach Noreen Herlihy currently sits at 313 wins, which has her ranked 23rd nationally in Division II in career wins and 13th among active coaches.

INDIANA SCOUTING REPORT
The Crimson Hawks have been a tough team to beat in 2025 with a 10-1-2 record overall, while earning a 7-1-1 record in PSAC West play. IUP is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches National Poll. The full list can be seen HERE. Slippery Rock is the only team to beat IUP so far this season. Indiana has posted a +40 goal differential through 13 games this season.
 
Elle Smith has been on fire in 2025. Smith leads all of Division II in goals with 19 and points (41). Smith also leads the nation in points per game (3.15) and goals per game (1.46).
 
To go along with Smith's goal scoring, IUP has four other players with multiple goals and 11 total goal scorers.
 
Melody Leiva leads the Crimson Hawks in assists with six. Jordina Rovira Sole and Taylor Serrano trail Leiva with four assists each. Five other IUP players have multiple assists.
 
The Crimson Hawks have seen three goalkeepers receive playing time this year, but Sarah Gatz has started 11 of the 13 matches for IUP. The sophomore from Douglassville, Pennsylvania has a 8-1-2 record, with 0.63 GAA and an .844 save percentage.

Slippery Rock continues PSAC West action when it travels to Pitt-Johnstown noon Saturday. SRU will be looking for the season-sweep over the Mountain Cats.
