Rock to host California on Senior Day

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team starts the second cycle of round-robin play in the PSAC West by hosting California (Pa.) on Senior Day 3 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team starts the second cycle of round-robin play in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division by hosting California (Pa.) for Senior Day 3 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
 
Slippery Rock enters Senior Day with a 6-3-0 overall record and a 6-1-0 PSAC West mark, while California owns a 0-8-2 record overall and a 0-5-2 PSAC West record.

SERIES HISTORY
Slippery Rock owns a 33-11-4 record against the Vulcans. The first meeting took place in 1993, a 3-0 California victory. The last four games ended with Slippery Rock on top by a combined score of 9-0. The last time The Rock conceded a goal to California was Oct. 19, 2022. Slippery Rock starting goalkeeper Leah Allman has never allowed a goal to Cal in her career in five games played. When hosting Cal, Slippery Rock owns a 17-7-0 record over the Vulcans.

Earlier this season , SRU took down Cal 5-0 on the road. Marissa Salisbury scored two goals to lead The Rock as Sophia Palermo, Lindsey Price and Allie Burns rounded out the scoring.
 
Within the 48 total games with between SRU and Cal, two occasions came in the PSAC Tournament and four meetings in the NCAA Tournament. Slippery Rock is 3-2-1 against California in postseason competition. The tie ended with California winning in penalty kicks in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock went on the road to Seton Hill University and came away with a 3-0 victory in a PSAC West match Wednesday from Dick's Sporting Goods Field.
 
Salisbury netted a brace with a pair of goals to lead the offense, while Price closed out the scoring for The Rock. Palermo, Abby Paterline and Briona Rice picked up one assist each.

Salisbury led The Rock with four shots, all on goal. Palermo (3), Paterline (2) and Lilia Battalini (3) registered multiple shots for SRU.
 
Allman earned the shutout win in goal after recording three saves.

The Rock controlled the pace of play Wednesday and outshot Seton Hill 19-8 in total shots and 10-3 in shots on goal.
 
SHUTTING THE DOOR
Slippery Rock's stellar defense has been on display during PSAC West action in 2025, as The Rock have four shutouts in their last six games. It has been 12 games since SRU has last achieved that and 13 games since The Rock completed back-to-back shutouts, which they accomplished against Pitt-Johnstown and Seton Hill.
 
STANDINGS CHECK
The match against California marks the first game of the second slate of round-robin play in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock sits in second place in the division with 18 points, one point behind Gannon for first place. The Rock's position in the standings is important as the top five teams in each division make the PSAC Tournament at the end of the regular season.

THE SECOND TIME THROUGH
The Rock have seen much success in PSAC competition in the last five seasons. SRU is 26-6-7 with +53 goal differential on the second cycle of round-robin play since 2019, when the PSAC split itself into two divisions.
 
SENIOR DAY CELEBRATION
Slippery Rock will honor seven seniors who are taking part in their last season with SRU prior to Saturday's game.
 
Abigail Koly – A forward from Avon, Ohio, Koly transferred to Slippery Rock from Akron University. Koly played 29 games between Bowling Green University and Akron from 2022-24. Koly played two games for SRU before being sidelined with an injury. On the international side, she has seen playing time on the Puerto Rico senior national team and the U20 national team.
 
Brianna Matteson – A goalkeeper from Matamoras, Pennsylvania transferred to The Rock after spending her freshman season at Division I Rider University and has gone on to be a trusted reserve goalkeeper. Matterson has played as a reserve in one appearance for SRU. Matteson is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
 
Briona Rice – A midfielder from Franklin Park, Pennsylvania, Rice has seen action in 16 games over her four years at The Rock. Rice has registered one goal and one assist for SRU and is a one-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
 
Sydney Smith – A defender from Evans City, Pennsylvania, Smith has been a crucial part of SRU's defensive backline the last two seasons. Smith has started 30 of the 35 games she played from 2022-25. Smith has registered one assist in her time at The Rock and is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
 
Marissa Salisbury – A forward from Arona, Pennsylvania, Salisbury has played in nine games for Slippery Rock in 2025. Salisbury leads The Rock this season with six goals, 14 points, 27 shots and 14 shots on goal.
 
Leah Walter – A midfielder from Milton, Pennsylvania, Walter has been a reserve midfielder for The Rock. Walter has seen action in seven games from 2022-25. Walter is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
 
Libby Zacharyasz – A midfielder from Strongsville, Ohio, Zacharyasz has been a four-year starter for The Rock. Zacharyasz has started 64 of her 65 appearances at SRU. In her career, Zahcarayasz has accumulated nine goals and one assist for 19 points. Four of Zacharyasz's goals were game-winners. Zacharyasz has earned spots on both the All-PSAC West Team and the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Team. Also, she has started the 7th most consecutive games in program history. Zacharyasz is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete.
 
LEADING THE ROCK
Salisbury leads The Rock with six goals and 14 points. 10 other Rock players have at least a point so far this season.

Paterline and Price have secured three goals apiece in 2025, trailing Salisbury by three.

Palermo paces Slippery Rock with four assists. Paterline trails Palermo with three assists. Salisbury (2), and Bailey McGee (2) are the other two Rock players with multiple. Rice, Eden Williams and Irene Doleno all have one helper.

Salisbury leads the charge in shots with 27. Paterline follows the senior with 17 shots. Battalini and Palermo trail the two forwards with 14 and 13 shots respectively.

Allman leads the Rock in minutes with 810. Lillian Snyder, a crucial part to SRU's backline, follows Allman in minutes with 778.
 
ALLMAN IN GOAL
Allman has been The Rock's starter for all nine games so far this season. The junior from Olmsted Township, Ohio has a 6-3-0 record with a .783 save percentage, while allowing 1.11 goals per game. Allman has recorded four shutouts so far this season.

CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Zacharyasz has been a starter since she arrived at Slippery Rock. In her career, Zacharyasz has started 64 out of the 65 games she has played, including 59 in a row. With a start against California, Zacharyasz will into a tie for eighth place in Slippery Rock history in consecutive games started, passing Elise Forry (2017-19) and Kelly Blake (2003-06) in the process.
 
PSAC LEADERS
During her impressive 2025 season so far, Salisbury ranks inside the top 10 in multiple PSAC categories. The senior from Arona, Pennsylvania, ranks eighth in the PSAC in points per game with 1.56, seventh in total goals with six and eighth in total points with 14.

Palermo, a junior from Wexford, Pennsylvania, ranks sixth in the PSAC with two game-winning goals. The two game-winners came in back-to-back games for Palermo against Edinboro and California. Palermo is also among the top players in the PSAC in assists. Palermo ranks fourth in the conference in total assists with four.
 
During her solid season in goal, Allman has boasted the third most shutouts in the PSAC with four clean sheets.
 
SALISBURY'S SCORING
Salisbury has made a missive impact on the scoring front from the moment she stepped on the pitch this year for Slippery Rock. The senior currently has six goals, 33 percent of SRU's goal production. The most goals for a player in their first season with The Rock is Lauren Steele, who had 17 in her first season in 2003. Sarah Arsenault (2001) and Sonya Maher (1996) both put home 15 goals in their respective first seasons. Beth Kimball buried 12 in 1996, while Meghan McGrath (2003) and Dara Demich (2013) round out the top five with 11 goals apiece in their inaugural Rock seasons.
 
REGIONAL RANKINGS
The most recent regional rankings of 2025 have been released by the United Soccer Coaches and The Rock stayed in eighth place in the Atlantic Region. Slippery Rock is one of eight PSAC schools in the rankings. Bloomsburg University, Shepherd University, Kutztown University and West Chester University represent the PSAC East, while No.7 Gannon University, Indiana University (Pa.) and Edinboro join Slippery Rock in representing the PSAC West. HERLIHY ON THE DIVISION II WINS LIST
Slippery Rock head coach Noreen Herlihy currently sits at 311 wins, which has her ranked 23rd nationally in Division II in career wins and 13th among active coaches.

CALIFORNIA SCOUTING REPORT
The Vulcans are winless in 2025 with a 0-8-2 record overall and a 0-5-2 mark in the PSAC West, but California sits seventh in the division over Seton Hill. The Vulcan's two ties came against Seton Hill and Pitt-Johnstown.
 
Freshman forward Macrina Robb has the lone Vulcan goal this season with Layna Grassi picking up an assist on that tally. Maggie Nesko leads Cal in shots with 11, while Robb and Izabella DeGlopper trail the midfielder with eight shots apiece.
 
Autumn Bishop has started all 10 games as the Vulcans goalkeeper. Bishop has accumulated a .762 save percentage and a 1.58 GAA in 2025.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Slippery Rock travels to Edinboro to attempt to secure the season-sweep over the Fighting Scots 5 p.m. Oct. 18.
