THE FRESHMAN MAKING AN IMPACT
The final two minutes of SRU's game at Gannon saw true freshmen Ava Darney and Hannah Pugliese see time on the court to record the first statistics of their collegiate careers.

Pugliese, a guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, sunk a 3-pointer and made two free throws to record the first five points of her career. They also went down as SRU's final five points of the night against the Golden Knights. Pugliese becomes the 15th different player to score for SRU this year and the ninth to make a 3-pointer.

Darney registered the first assist of her career on Pugliese's 3-pointer. The forward from Youngstown, Ohio is now the 11th different player to assist on a made field goal for Slippery Rock this year.

WINNING THE TURNOVER BATTLE
Slippery Rock forced 19 turnovers out of Gannon, the most that SRU has garnered in six games. The game marked the sixth time this season that The Rock forced at least 19 turnovers. SRU's season-high came against Millersville University, a game in which The Rock pressured the Marauders into 21 turnovers through 50 minutes of play.

SRU also won the turnover battle for the second time in four games, committing just 15 turnovers itself.

Joseph-Bernard led The Rock with three steals, while Goetz recorded two takeaways herself. Hook came away with one of SRU's six steals with a takeaway in the second quarter.

SRU additionally edged its opponent in fastbreak points for the second time in four games with a 14-12 advantage against Gannon. The game marked the fifth time this season that The Rock had tallied at least 14 fastbreak points. SRU cashed in a season-best 16 fastbreak points against Glenville State University.

SRU's 14 fastbreak points against Gannon were well distributed among five different players:

Atkins reached double figures in 23 of last year's 25 games on her way to being named SRU's first PSAC West Freshman of the Year winner in 24 years. Through 41 total games with Slippery Rock, Atkins has now averaged 14.4 points per game throughout her collegiate career. As it stands, that ranks 12th all-time in SRU's record book.

FINISHING A MARATHON
Slippery Rock will be concluding its busiest chunk of the regular season Saturday by playing its sixth game in a 16-day span. In the 20 days following Saturday, The Rock will play just three games:

•Wednesday, January 22 vs. Indiana University (Pa.) – 5:30 p.m. at Morrow Field House
•Wednesday, January 29 vs. Edinboro – 5:30 p.m. at Morrow Field House
•Saturday, February 1 at Seton Hill University – 1 p.m.

That road game at Seton Hill marks the first of seven games to be played in the month of February. SRU's final regular season game is slated for Feb. 26 at Edinboro.

WHAT SATURDAY COULD MEAN
While SRU still has 10 games to be played in its PSAC West slate, Saturday's game has the potential to carry significant playoff implications for The Rock and the Golden Eagles.

The top six of eight teams in the PSAC West will qualify for the 2025 PSAC Tournament, which begins March 3. SRU is four games ahead of Pitt-Johnstown, which is 0-10 in conference play. The Rock are just one game behind Clarion and California (Pa.), two 5-5 teams currently tied for fifth.

A Slippery Rock win would move The Rock to 5-6 in PSAC competition and drop Clarion to 5-6 in the league, momentarily giving SRU the head-to-head tiebreaker over Clarion with another game to be played between the two sides Feb. 19 at Morrow Field House.

While anything can happen throughout the course of the regular season, it is likely that the SRU-Clarion series will weigh heavily in separating the two teams in the standings.

THE REBOUNDING ROCK
Slippery Rock is 5-3 this season in games immediately following a loss and 6-3 if The Rock's season-opening win over Davis & Elkins College is factored in following a regular-season-finale loss to end the 2023-24 year.

Since the turn of the calendar to 2025, The Rock have gone 2-0 in games after a loss. Slippery Rock responded to its loss to Seton Hill with a 71-58 win over Pitt-Johnstown and turned things around after a three-point loss at California with a three-point win over Lake Erie College.
