LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock fell three points shy of its first road win at California (Pa.) since 2001, falling to the Vulcans in a 62-59 heartbreaker Jan. 8 at the Convocation Center. SRU shot 53.3 percent from the floor (24-of-45) and 60 percent beyond the 3-point arc (6-of-10) but allowed 28 points off 28 turnovers throughout the contest.
Â
Tahmala Thorpe led SRU with 18 points and five assists, while
Regan Atkins contributed 15 points and six rebounds.
Kayley Joseph-Bernard joined Atkins in pulling down a team-leading six boards while scoring 14 points herself.
Â
After shooting 36.4 percent through the first quarter (4-of-11), The Rock knocked down their last 20-of-34 field goal attempts (58.8 percent) in the final 45 minutes of the game.
Â
Cal overcame a 12-4 SRU run with 4:20 left in the game with an 8-0 run of its own, earning a 61-57 lead with 1:19 on the clock.
Sophia Hook made a jump shot with 27 seconds left to cut the score in half, but The Rock still had two fouls to give before Cal reached the bonus.
Â
The Vulcans were able to drain the remaining time before eventually heading to the foul line and fend off a missed driving layup from The Rock with five seconds left. The three-point difference marked Slippery Rock's narrowest loss to California (Pa.) since 2007.
Â
LEADING THE ROCK
Atkins continues to lead Slippery Rock in the scoring column with 13.5 points per game, accounting for over 20 percent of the team's total scoring (20.9 percent, 189-of-905). Thorpe has added 10.4 points with Hook registering 10.0 points per game for The Rock as well. Joseph-Bernard has been a steady presence underneath with 8.6 points per game.
Â
Joseph-Bernard has increased her shooting percentage to a team-high 51.4 percent, making 54-of-105 total field goal attempts. Atkins ranks just behind her with a 46.8 percent clip on the year (65-of-139).
Alyssa Gillin continues to shoot above 40 percent from the field as well (40.7 percent, 35-of-86).
Â
Atkins leads Slippery Rock's shooting from 3-point range, converting 41.5 percent from distance (17-of-41). Hook has made more threes than anyone else on the team with 20 triples sunk on 63 looks from beyond the arc (31.7 percent).
Brooklyn Jones has landed 40 percent of her 3-point attempts (14-of-35).
Â
Joseph-Bernard has reached 115 rebounds in 14 games at The Rock, averaging a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. Atkins has pulled down 6.2 rebounds per game with Gillin ranking third on the squad with 3.9 boards per contest.
Â
In addition to strong rebounding, Joseph-Bernard leads Slippery Rock with 4.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.1 blocks per game. Thorpe has increased her per-game output to 3.3 assists, while Atkins is one total steal behind Joseph-Bernard on the year, averaging 1.3 takeaways per game.
Â
A NEW 3-POINT LEADER IN THE CONFERENCE
After splashing 6-of-10 against California (Pa.) from behind the 3-point line, Slippery Rock became the top 3-point shooting team in the PSAC with a season average of 32.9 percent. The Rock's precision from 3-point range also stacks up fourth in the Atlantic Region:
Â
NCAA D-II Atlantic Region 3-Point Shooting
1. Frostburg State (MEC) – 34.9%
2. West Virginia Wesleyan (MEC) – 34.1%
3. West Liberty (MEC) – 33.3%
4.
THE ROCK (PSAC) – 32.9%
5. Elizabeth City State (CIAA) – 32.4%
Â
Slippery Rock went 60 percent from the perimeter for the first time in a game this season. Coincidentally, the last time The Rock made at least 50 percent from 3-point territory in a game was in the team's trip to California (Pa.) last season.
Kristina Donza provided three of SRU's six made threes out of 12 attempts (50 percent) in a 72-53 loss Feb. 10, 2024.
Â
SRU's game against Cal marked the first time in 395 games that The Rock shot at least 60 percent from the 3-point arc. SRU hit 14-of-21 (66.7 percent) from deep in a 101-72 win over Lock Haven University Feb. 18, 2009 at Morrow Field House. Amanda Nero led Slippery Rock from 3-point distance making 9-of-10 attempts, shooting 13-of-17 (.765) overall.
Â
SRU's loss at Cal was the third occurrence in the entire PSAC this season of a team shooting the 3-ball at least 60 percent. Pitt-Johnstown shot 61.5 percent (8-of-13) in an 82-68 win over Davis & Elkins College, as did California against East Stroudsburg University in a 69-63 road win Dec. 7.
Â
A THIRD CAREER-HIGH IN TWO GAMES
Just one game after Atkins (24 points) and Hook (21) picked up career-highs in The Rock's 71-58 win over Pitt-Johnstown, Thorpe set a career-high for herself with a team-leading 18 points against the Vulcans.
Â
Thorpe, a graduate transfer from Mississauga, Ontario played all 40 minutes against California, burying all three 3-point attempts she took. Thorpe's performance at Cal topped her previous personal record of 17 points, which led the way for Slippery Rock in its 69-56 home win over West Chester University.
Â
Thorpe has now been Slippery Rock's top scorer three times, second only to Atkins, who has led The Rock in the scoring column in seven games.
Â
STELLAR SHOOTING CONTINUES
Slippery Rock has now shot an even 50 percent (48-of-96) from the floor in its last two games combined, going 45.3 percent (24-of-53) against Pitt-Johnstown and 53.3 percent (24-of-45) at Cal. SRU now ranks seventh in the PSAC with a field goal percentage of 41.9.'
Â
Joseph-Bernard has shot 65 percent in the last two games combined (13-of-20), going 6-of-12 against the Mountain Cats and hitting 7-of-8 versus the Vulcans. Atkins has recorded a 61.9 percent shooting rate in the last two games as well (13-of-21), thanks to a 7-of-9 showing against UPJ and a 6-of-12 effort at California.
Â
CONSISTENT SHOOTING, TOO
Joseph-Bernard has improved her field goal percentage on the season to 51.4 percent (54-of-105), tops on the team. The six-foot forward from Milton, Ontario has shot at least 50 percent from the court in four of the last five games, cashing in on 57.5 percnet of her shots in that span (23-of-40).
Â
The junior from Milton, Ontario is coming off her best career field goal percentage in a game, a 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) performance at Cal. Joseph-Bernard's previous career-high percentagewise saw her shoot 80 percent (4-of-5) when she played with Hofstra University in a 113-24 win over Division III Farmingdale State University last season.
Â
REGAN ON A ROLL
As Slippery Rock's leading scorer with 13.5 points per game, Atkins has reached double-digit tallies in her last six consecutive games. In that span, which began in SRU's game at Bloomsburg Dec. 7, the sophomore from New Castle, Pennsylvania has averaged 16.5 points per game for The Rock.
Â
Atkins reached double figures in 23 of last year's 25 games on her way to being named SRU's first PSAC West Freshman of the Year winner in 24 years. Through 39 total games with Slippery Rock, Atkins has now averaged 14.6 points per game throughout her collegiate career.
Â
Should Atkins come out of her 40
th career game with the same per-game output, she would tentatively rank 10
th all-time at Slippery Rock in points per game among student-athletes with at least 40 appearances. Diane Walker (1984-86) holds the all-time record with 21.9 points per game through a 53-game career.
Â
DEFENSE STEPPING UP
Slippery Rock recorded five blocks against California (Pa.), its second five-block game of the season. The Rock also blocked five shots against Tiffin University Nov. 26. Joseph-Bernard notched three of those blocks against the Vulcans with Jones and
Mairan Haggerty both turning a shot away as well.
Â
Atkins tied a season-high four steals against California, now with seven steals in her last two games and nine in her last three. She has made up just under half (7-of-15, 46.7 percent) of The Rock's steals through the past two contests.
Â
BOUNCING BACK
SRU is 4-3 in games immediately following a loss this year and 5-3 when the season-opener against D&E is included after The Rock's season-finale loss to Mercyhurst University last year.
Â
Most recently, The Rock responded to their loss to nationally ranked Seton Hill University with a home win over Pitt-Johnstown Jan. 6. A win over Lake Erie would also improve SRU's record at Morrow Field House to 4-4 on the season.
Â
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Slippery Rock enters its final non-conference game of the year as winners of 14 of its last 25 non-conference contests. In addition to that .560 winning percentage, The Rock are 12-8 in their last four seasons (.600) against teams that are not in the PSAC.
Â
THE ROCK vs. THE G-MAC
Slippery Rock has won four of its last eight games against G-MAC opponents, defeating Malone University and Ursuline College in both 2021 and 2022.
Â
A win over Lake Erie would mark SRU's 21
st all-time win against an opponent currently playing in the G-MAC. The Storm are also the third different G-MAC school to visit Morrow Field House this year. SRU dropped its home opener to Malone, 80-65, and fell in an overtime heartbreaker to Tiffin, 78-75, Nov. 26.
Â
