Rock drops non-conference finale to Walsh in OT, 67-61

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team dropped its non-conference finale to Walsh in overtime Sunday, 67-61, at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team dropped its non-conference finale to Walsh University in overtime Sunday, 67-61, at Morrow Field House.

With the loss, Slippery Rock fell to 2-4 overall, while Walsh's record improves to 4-2.

The Rock were led by Alyssa Gillin's 18 points, five rebounds, five blocks and one steal. Gillin's five blocks are the fifth most in program history for a single game.Gillin shot 7-for-13 from the floor overall and 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Iyanna Wade was the only other Rock player in double-figures with 15 points on 7-for-16 shooting overall. Wade also dished out a career-high seven assist and grabbed three boards.

Kayley Joseph-Bernard put in an all-around performance of nine points, a career-high 15 rebounds, three assists, four blocks and three steals.

Sophia Hook (eight points, six rebounds), Karianna Woods (six points, six rebounds) and Mairan Haggerty (five points, five rebounds) rounded out the Slippery Rock scorers.

As a team, SRU blocked nine shots, which is the program's most in a single game since 1990. 

The Rock jumped out to an 11-point lead (17-6) in the first 6:41 of the first quarter, but the Cavaliers responded with a 11-2 run to end the frame, giving SRU a 19-17 lead after 10 minutes. SRU has won the first quarter five out of its six games this season.

The lead was exchanged twice in the second quarter, ending in a 30-25 Slippery Rock advantage.

After an even third frame, SRU held its five-point lead until the 3:21 mark of the fourth quarter when Walsh constructed a mini 6-2 run to tie up the game at 54. The teams exchanged two baskets apiece to end regulation deadlocked at 58.

The Cavaliers controlled the overtime period as they held The Rock to three points in the extra frame, while scoring nine points to finish of their 67-61 victory.  

Slippery Rock ended the game shooting 41 percent (25-of-61) from the field overall, 36 percent (9-for-25) from the 3-point line and 25 percent (2-of-8) from the charity stripe.

SRU cashed in from beyond the arc as it outpaced the Cavaliers with five more made 3-pointers. (9-4)

Walsh controlled the paint with a +18 margin (44-26). The Cavaliers capitalized off 15 Rock turnovers while only turning the ball over eight times, leading to a 17-to-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Walsh finished the tilt shooting 37 percent (27-of-73) from the floor overall, 28.6 percent (4-for-14) from beyond the arc and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the foul line.

Kiley Dyrlund scored 29 points to lead Walsh on 12-of-21 shooting from the field overall and put in five of her eight attempts from the free throw line.
Carlota Lopez (11) and Sydney Ludvigsen (10) were the only other Cavaliers to score in double figures. Lopez and Ludvigsen combined for seven on Walsh's nine points in the extra frame.

Slippery Rock will start Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference crossover play 1 p.m. Dec. 6 at Mansfield.
