Zacharyasz named PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week

Slippery Rock women’s soccer defensive midfielder Libby Zacharyasz won PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week honors for the third time in her career, the conference office announced Monday.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Slippery Rock University women's soccer defensive midfielder Libby Zacharyasz won Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division Defensive Athlete of the Week honors for the third time in her career, the conference office announced Monday.

Zacharyasz helped Slippery Rock to a 1-0-1 start in PSAC West play last week, scoring against Pitt-Johnstown in a 3-0 win and leading the team with six shots through a 1-1 draw versus Seton Hill University. In total, she wrapped up the week with one goal and nine total shots, two of which landed on target.

Zacharyasz becomes the fourth recorded SRU women's soccer student-athlete to win a PSAC weekly award at least three times. The Strongsville, Ohio native joins Emma Yoder with 12, Rachel Edge with five and Sarah Arsenault with three PSAC weekly selections. She was named to the award twice last year.

Already having taken two shots against Pitt-Johnstown, Zacharyasz's third shot of the game and lone shot on goal against the Mountain Cats found the back of the net in the 88th minute, padding SRU's 3-0 win. The senior defender was in the right spot on a Sydney Patrick corner kick, needing just a tap on the ball for the game's final goal.

A team-high six shots against Seton Hill was also a career-best for Zacharyasz, who placed one of those looks on net. The Rock took a 1-0 lead over the Griffins in the 69th minute on an own goal that came about on a well-struck corner taken by Ava Balazentis. SRU held that lead until Seton Hill scored the equalizer via a free kick with just 2:51 remaining.

Through the first four games of the season, Zacharyasz is the team's leader in shots with 11, two of which have been on the cage. She has accompanied fellow defender Nina King and goalkeeper Leah Allman in playing all 90 minutes of each match.

Slippery Rock will return to the road for its first of three straight away games 1 p.m. Saturday at Indiana University (Pa.). The Rock swept the Crimson Hawks in a pair of one-goal victories last year.
