SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team sits third in the team standings after two days of competition at the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships.

The Rock will enter Sunday's final day of action from Shippensburg University needing a strong day to secure a team trophy. Shippensburg had a strong first two days and has a commanding lead with 84.83 points. East Stroudsburg sits second with 49 points, followed by Slippery Rock in third with 37.33 points. Kutztown is fourth with 29 points and Indiana (Pa.) is fifth with 18 points.

The Rock got a pair of All-PSAC performances Saturday on the second day of competition with
Zack Duda and John Juszynsku both recording third place finishes in their respective events.

Duda closed the decathlon with a strong effort in the 1,500-meter run to move up from fourth after nine events to take third in the final standings with 6,266 points.
Gavin Thomas was sixth with 5,877 points and
Ethan Folmer was seventh with 5,633 points to give SRU 11 points in the decathlon.

Juszynski closed out the day with a third place showing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, where he posted a time of 9:28.49 to pick up six points in the team standings.
Â
Slippery Rock also scored in the long jump, high jump and discus on Saturday and has now tallied points in each of the seven event finals over the first two days of action.

Bryan Dworek was fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.97 meters to pick up five points.
Seaton Wozniak took fifth in the discus throw with a mark of 46.48 meters.
Zach Gose took seventh at 45.87 meters and
Joshua Gose was eighth at 44.22 meters to give The Rock seven points in the discus.
Logan Turton tied for fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.90 meters and
Grady Cobb tied for eighth with the same mark to give SRU 3.33 points in the high jump.

In addition to the five event finals contested Saturday, Slippery Rock also competed in the preliminary rounds of all events from 800 meters and below on the track.

The headliner from the prelims came in the first event of the day when the 4x100-meter relay team of
Kanye Thompson,
AJ Virata,
Matthew Crow and
Jacob Thompson shattered the SRU program record with the No. 1 time in the prelims of 40.61 seconds. That broke the former SRU record of 40.78 seconds that was set in 2017.

Both Thompsons, Crow and Virata had busy days outside of the relay and qualified individually for Sunday finals.
Kanye Thompson clocked the fastest prelim time in the 100-meter dash at 10.50 seconds. Virata was the sixth-best in the 100m prelims at 10.84 seconds to give SRU two finalists. Virata also ran the fourth-best 200-meter prelim time at 21.96 seconds and
Jacob Thompson was the fifth-fastest at 22.01 seconds. Crow qualified for a pair of Sunday hurdle finals, winning his 110-meter hurdle heat in 14.77 seconds and posting the seventh-best 400-meter hurdle time of 55.48 seconds.

Crow was joined in reaching the 400-meter hurdle finals by
Owen Rindler with the No. 3 time of 54.61 seconds and
Cade Adams with the No. 5 time of 55.17 seconds.

Slippery Rock also sent one runner through in the 400-meter dash with
Micah Good posting the No. 8 time of 49.72 seconds.

The only event contested Saturday that SRU failed to advance a runner to Sunday's final was the 800-meter run, where
Ryan Corbitt was 12th in 1:58.94.

The final 14 events of the championship will be contested Sunday with action scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in the field events and 12:30 p.m. on the track.
