EMPORIA, Kan. –
Anna Igims qualified for the finals in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and
Kanye Thompson took 16th in the 100-meter dash while representing Slippery Rock University at the 2024 NCAA Division II Track & Field National Championships Thursday evening from Emporia State University.
Â
Thompson and Igims were the lone SRU athletes competing Thursday on the first of three days of action at nationals.
Â
Thompson led things off by running in the 100-meter dash prelims, where he placed 16th with a time of 10.34 seconds in his debut appearance at a national meet. That time was the second-best of Thompson's career, trailing only his SRU record mark of 10.27 seconds that he set at the PSAC Championships three weeks ago. The men's 100m field was exceptional this year with two athletes breaking 10.00 seconds in the prelims. It took a time of 10.16 seconds to reach the finals.
Â
Igims closed out the first day of action for Slippery Rock with a stellar run in the 3,000-meter steeplechase prelims, where she took third in her heat to earn one of the four automatic qualifying spots for Friday's finals. She clocked a time of 10:33.59, which ended up being the third-fastest time of the prelims.
Â
She is one of 12 athletes that advanced and will race for the national title in the finals Friday night at 8:30 p.m. ET (7:30 CT). If Igims finishes the race, she will become an All-American for the first time in her SRU career as the top eight finishers are named first team All-Americans and finishers 9-12 are named second team All-Americans.
Â
Igims will be the only SRU athlete to compete Friday on the second day of the meet.
Â
The Rock will have three athletes in action Saturday on the final day of the competition.
Sarah Corrie and
Joshua Gose will throw the shot put and
Drew Layton will jump in the pole vault.
