BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team finished second at the 2024 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Championships that wrapped up Monday evening from Lehigh University.
Â
Shippensburg claimed its 13th straight indoor title with a final score of 182 points, pulling away from SRU over the final five events of the meet after picking up 29 points in the 3,000-meter run and 20 points in the heptathlon to surge ahead in what was a close team battle for much of the opening two days. The Rock finished second with 117.5 points, outscoring their projection entering the meet by more than 20 points. East Stroudsburg finished third with 92 points, followed by Kutztown with 65 points and Lock Haven with 50 points to round out the top five. A total of 11 teams recorded points in the competition.
Â
Slippery Rock scored in 15 of the 17 events over the two days and came away with three event wins Monday with
Kanye Thompson winning the 60-meter dash,
AJ Virata winning the 200-meter dash and
Matthew Crow winning the 60-meter hurdles.
Â
Virata, who was also fifth in the 60-meter dash, was named the Most Outstanding Track Athlete of the meet after voting by the league's head coaches, picking up his second straight major honor after being named the Overall Most Outstanding Athlete at the 2023 meet.
Â
The Rock also grabbed the top academic award Monday with
Joshua Gose being named the PSAC Champion Scholar Award winner for owning the highest GPA among all the male athletes competing at the championship. Gose also picked up an All-PSAC honor in the shot put Monday to go along with earning the academic honor.
Â
Slippery Rock swept all three of the short sprint and hurdle races Monday with a trio of underclassmen picking up titles. Virata repeated as the indoor 200-meter dash champion after clocking a time of 21.94 seconds in the finals. He was the only athlete to break the 22.0-second mark over two days on the 200-meter flat track at Lehigh.
Â
Thompson earned his first career PSAC individual title with a lean at the line in the 60-meter dash to finish with a time of 6.83 seconds. The photo finish showed Thompson won the race by seven-one-thousandths of a second. Virata took fifth in 6.90 seconds to give SRU 14 points in the event.
Â
Crow picked up where he left off Sunday when he broke the SRU record in the 60-meter hurdles in the prelims. He broke his own record of 8.16 seconds with a winning time of 8.11 seconds to claim his first career individual title.
Â
Slippery Rock also got an All-PSAC finish on the track Monday from
Joseph Cintavey, who moved up three places from his seed position to place third in the mile in 4:17.20.
Â
Jacob Thompson picked up one point in the 400-meter dash finals with a courageous effort. After being injured Sunday in the prelims, Thompson limped his way around the track to finish and pick up one point in eighth place in the finals Monday. The final points on the track came from the 4x400-meter relay team of
Tyler Morosky,
Trey Huha,
Micah Good and
Kyle Rauchut, who took fourth in 3:26.33 to score five points.
Â
Gose and
Seaton Wozniak led the way in the field Monday with a pair of All-PSAC finishes in the shot put. Wozniak recorded a career-best throw of 16.97 meters to place second, while Gose followed close behind with a season-best mark of 16.84 meters to finish third and give SRU 14 points in the shot put.
Â
Taye Lynch and
Zack Duda both scored in the triple jump Monday with Lynch placing sixth with a leap of 14.22 meters and Duda placing seventh with a mark of 13.95 meters.
Â
Logan Turton tallied a fourth place finish after recording a career-best clearance of 1.98 meters in the high jump to pick up five points for the team.
Â
The final points came from the multi-event competition, where
Gavin Thomas took sixth in the heptathlon with a score of 4,423 points. Duda was third entering the final day, but slipped to 11th after being disqualified in the 60-meter hurdles and recording zero points for that event. Still, Duda bounced back to score for SRU in the triple jump Monday, completing eight total events in two days.
Â
Over the two-day meet, Slippery Rock's men won four events (
Bryan Dworek won the long jump Sunday), had nine All-PSAC honorees, earned the Track MVP award and took home the Champion Scholar award.
Â
The runner-up finish marks the 13th straight year The Rock have finished inside the top three in the final team standings at the indoor championships.
