LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock is coming off a 2023-24 campaign that saw The Rock finish eighth out of nine teams in the PSAC West with a 2-23 overall record and a 2-20 mark in PSAC competition. With Mercyhurst University's departure to the Division I ranks, the PSAC West will consist of the eight remaining teams vying for six PSAC Tournament berths.
Â
WHERE THEY STAND
The Slippery Rock women's basketball team was voted sixth out of eight in the PSAC West preseason coaches' poll, the conference office announced Oct. 24. That marks SRU's highest spot on the poll since being slated fourth in 2018.
Â
Reigning PSAC Tournament champions Gannon University topped this year's PSAC West poll, earning six first-place votes. California (Pa.) received one first-place vote in second ahead of IUP in third. The final first-place vote went to Edinboro, which landed fourth in the poll.
Â
Slippery Rock finished behind Seton Hill University in fifth and ahead of Pitt-Johnstown and Clarion in seventh and eighth respectively. Lock Haven University landed atop the PSAC East vote with eight first-place selections. West Chester University received the final first-place vote in second.
Â
LEADING THE ROCK
Slippery Rock's group of returners is highlighted by reigning PSAC West Freshman of the Year
Regan Atkins. The sophomore from New Castle, Pennsylvania is back with The Rock after starting all 25 games in her rookie year, becoming the first SRU women's basketball player to win Freshman of the Year honors in 24 years.
Â
Averaging 36.7 minutes per game, Atkins broke Slippery Rock's freshman minutes record with 917 minutes spent on the court. She led the team with 381 points, which ranked third all-time among SRU freshmen.
Â
Atkins wound up 10
th nationally among Division II freshmen with 15.2 points per game, stacking up fourth overall in the PSAC West by shooting 44.7 percent from the floor.
Â
BACK ON THE SIDELINE
After her first full offseason with the team,Â
Ryenn Micaletti heads into her second year at the helm of The Rock women's basketball program. While this will be Micaletti's second year as a head coach, it will add to a storied career that has included over a decade of serving on various coaching staffs.
Â
After a successful playing career at Seton Hill (2007-11) that included two NCAA Tournament appearances, Micaletti served as an assistant coach at Point Park University (2011-13), IUP (2013-14), and Slippery Rock (2014-16) before ascending to the Division I echelon to be Navy's assistant from 2016-20.
Â
Micaletti gained more Division I experience as the associate head coach at both Longwood University (2020-22) and St. Louis University (2022-23) prior to becoming SRU's 17
th head coach in program history in May 2023.
Â
Micaletti earned her first career win as a head coach Dec. 19, 2023 with a 49-32 victory over Shippensburg University at home.
Â
Assistant coachÂ
Christian Harbaugh will also accompany Micaletti again on the sidelines, entering his second year at The Rock. Micaletti and Harbaugh will lead a roster that features 17 student-athletes comprised of 10 returners, four transfers and three true freshmen.
Â
RETURNING TO THE ROCK
Among Slippery Rock's returning bunch are six of last year's top eight scorers. Rising junior
Deryn Moye ranked third on the team last year with 5.9 points per game, leading The Rock with a .406 three-point percentage (26-of-64). She also spearheaded Slippery Rock's offensive efforts with 1.5 assists per game and ranked second on the team with 27 steals.
Â
Now a senior,
Endya Robinson is back with Slippery Rock following a junior season that saw the forward from Chicago, Illinois lead SRU with 5.5 rebounds per game. Robinson additionally tallied 5.1 points per game and chipped in 23 steals on the year.
Â
Slippery Rock is also looking forward to having both
Alyssa Gillin and
Sophia Hook back from injury last year. Gillin appeared in 21 games in the 2022-23 season and averaged 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game, while Hook brings an impressive resume out of Brookfield High School in Ohio.
Â
SRU's returners are rounded out by
Tori Johnson,
Hallie Raabe,
Emily Venick,
Kaylin Venick and
Anye Washington. That group of five accounted for a cumulative 12.2 points per game last season.
Â
TRANSFERRING TO THE ROCK
The Rock will gain a wealth of experience from graduate transfers
Brooklyn Jones and
Tahmala Thorpe, as well as junior
Kayley Joseph-Bernard and sophomore
Mairan Haggerty.
Â
Jones, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, is returning to Western Pennsylvania after spending three seasons at Niagara University and a senior year at Morgan State University. Jones appeared in 68 games for the Purple Eagles while averaging 2.8 points, 1.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists per game before playing in 17 games for the Morgan State Bears.
Â
Thorpe, a grad student from Mississauga, Ontario, also spent time in Division I basketball by playing two seasons at the University of Akron. Thorpe played in 39 games for the Zips, scoring 1.1 points in 8.1 minutes per game.
Â
Joseph-Bernard, a 6-foot forward out of Milton, Ontario, comes to SRU for her junior year after shooting 46.7 percent from the floor at Division I Hofstra University. Joseph-Bernard also contributed eight blocks and 11 steals in her two seasons with The Pride.
Â
Haggerty, the youngest of the four transfers, will be playing closer to her native New Caslte, Pennsylvania following one year at Seton Hill. Haggerty played 20 games for the Griffins, coincidentally recording a career-high five rebounds in Seton Hill's trip to Morrow Field House last year.
Â
HEADING SOUTH TO THE ROCK
Joseph-Bernard and Thorpe, both natives of Ontario, become the first pair of international women's basketball players to begin their time at The Rock in the same season.
Â
Joseph-Bernard and Thorpe also become the seventh and eighth recorded international players to have ever played for SRU. They're the first Canadian players to represent The Rock since Alex Beatty wore the Green and White from 2009-11.

Â
ENROLLING AT THE ROCK
SRU's roster this year is rounded out by three true freshmen in
Ava Darney,
Rebecca Goetz and
Hannah Pugliese.
Â
A forward from Youngstown, Ohio, Darney was a four-sport athlete at John F. Kennedy Catholic where she lettered in basketball, volleyball, softball and track and field.
Â
Goetz comes to The Rock as a forward from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania who lettered in both basketball and soccer at Avonworth High School.
Â
Slippery Rock football fans will be familiar with the Pugliese name, as offensive lineman Luke Pugliese's younger sister Hannah joins The Rock this year. The guard from Pittsburgh comes to SRU after spending time on both the basketball court and the softball diamond at Penn Hills High School.
Â
NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS
Slippery Rock is 8-2 in its last 10 games against Mountain East Conference opponents, last picking up an 86-82 win over Fairmont State University at Morrow Field House Nov. 27, 2022. That said, this weekend's games will mark the first time head coach Micaletti has led The Rock against MEC teams in her career.
Â
Only playing three non-conference games in the regular season last year, that meeting with Fairmont State in 2022 marks Slippery Rock's last out-of-conference win to date.
Â
WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND
Slippery Rock's season-opening contests this weekend will mark the first time that SRU has played a Saturday-Sunday doubleheader since splitting with Kutztown University and West Chester Dec. 18-19, 2021.
Â
The Rock played another weekend doubleheader earlier that year at West Virginia State University, defeating Notre Dame College (Ohio) 84-66 prior to suffering an 84-71 defeat to WVSU.
Â
DAY ONE
Slippery Rock is looking for its 30
th season-opening win since 1972, going 29-22 in openers since then. SRU is 12-6 in that time when the first game of the season was played at a neutral venue.
Â
RECORD WATCH
With so many new faces on the SRU roster this year, it's worth noting that Diane Walker holds the program record for most points scored in an SRU debut with 26 points against Mount Saint Mary's in 1984. She is one of just five recorded players who have reached 20 points in their Rock women's basketball debut.
Â
Atkins and
Kristina Donza led SRU in its season-opener against Ursuline College last year, both with 13 points. Atkins went on to top that total in five of her next six outings.
