Â
PUEBLO, Colo. – Four members of the Slippery Rock University track and field teams will represent The Rock at the NCAA Division II National Championships May 25-27 at Colorado State University-Pueblo after the NCAA announced its accepted entries list Tuesday.
Â
The Rock men will be represented by throwers
Dalton Anderson (javelin) and
John Eakin (shot put), while the SRU women will be represented by distance runner
Anna Igims (3,000-meter steeplechase) and thrower
Trinity Clark (javelin).
Â
Three of the four SRU entries will be making their second straight trip to the outdoor national meet, while Igims will make her National Championship debut.
Â
Igims will lead things off for SRU with the steeplechase prelims Thursday evening, May 25 at 8:40 p.m. (ET). If she advances to the finals, that race will take place Friday evening, May 26 at 9:15 p.m. (ET). All of the other SRU entries will compete in their finals Saturday, May 27. Clark will be the first to compete that day with the women's javelin at 1:30 p.m. (ET), followed by Anderson in the men's javelin at 4:45 p.m. (ET) and Eakin in the men's shot put at 7:05 p.m. (ET).
Â
Clark and Anderson both earned first team All-America honors in the javelin last year at the 2022 National Championships with Clark placing third in the competition and Anderson finishing eighth. Eakin earned second team All-America honors last spring with a 12th place finish in the shot put at nationals.
Â
In order to be accepted to the national meet, a student-athlete must meet the NCAA minimum qualifying standard in their event and then rank high enough on the list of declared entries to be accepted. The NCAA selection committee aims for a minimum field size of 20 athletes in individual events and can adjust the fields based on the strongest events with a maximum field size of 24 athletes.
Â
Slippery Rock had 13 individuals record the NCAA provisional standard in their respective events this spring with nine of those 13 missing the cutoff for the national meet. The closest of those misses was senior shot putter
Sarah Corrie, who was the first athlete left out of the field after ranking 21st in the shot put this fall. Other SRU athletes that narrowly missed acceptance and ranked between No. 20 and No. 30 in their events included AJ Virta (No. 26 in 200-meter dash),
Tiffany Jolayemi (No. 28 in hammer throw),
Joshua Gose (No. 29 in shot put) and
Kendall Grossman (No. 29 in pole vault).
Â
Four other Slippery Rock men recorded NCAA marks this spring, including
Shannon Dooley (800-meter run),
Dan Hyatt (pole vault),
Bryan Dworek (long jump) and
Joshua VanDeMark (hammer throw).
