Rock opens conference play vs. IUP and Clarion

The Slippery Rock University softball team is set to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition with back-to-back doubleheaders this week against Indiana (Pa.) and Clarion.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University softball team is set to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition with back-to-back doubleheaders this week against Indiana (Pa.) and Clarion.
 
SRU will first travel to IUP for two games Tuesday followed by returning home to host Clarion for a doubleheader at Kasnevich Field. First pitch of game one on both days is set for 2 p.m.

Fans are reminded that there are NO PETS allowed in any SRU athletics facilities. Please do not bring dogs or any other pets to the game. Unless they are a registered service animal, you will be asked to remove your pet from the facility.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. IUP
The Crimson Hawks hold a 78-43 lead in the all-time series over The Rock dating back to 1977. A sweep of IUP Tuesday would be the first time SRU has done so since April 17, 2019 when it earned a 12-6 win on game one and 9-3 game two victory on the road.
 
Slippery Rock split its more recent series with Indiana on April 22, 2022 with a 1-0 victory to start the day before suffering a 2-0 loss.
 
Game one starter Kelsi Anderson aided SRU to their 1-0 victory after holding IUP to just two hits and no runs, earning her seventh complete-game win and third shutout victory of the 2022 season.SRU's offense was led over the doubleheader by Cami Fisk who went 2-for-6 while scoring The Rock's lone run of the day on a solo home run.

ALL-TIME SERIES vs. CLARION
Dating back to the 2015 season, Slippery Rock has won 12 of its last 14 games against Clarion to improve its all-time record against the Golden Eagles to 69-37. SRU has not lost a home game against Clarion since the 2006 season. The Rock took three of four games from Clarion a year ago with a home sweep and road doubleheader split.

LAST TIME OUT
SRU concluded its time at The Spring Games by splitting a pair of contests March 17 with a 13-2 five-inning win over Alliance University and 13-1 loss to Bentley University.
 
Slippery Rock was led on the day by Alexsa Hurd who over two games went 5-for-8 with five RBI and one run scored.
 
SPRING BREAK SUCCESS
The Rock secured an 8-4 record at the conclusion of their spring break trip this year. The 8-4 mark is Slippery Rock's first winning spring trip record since the 2012 season where it went 6-5 during its time in Florida.
 
This year, SRU earned wins over Mercy College (6-2), Saint Thomas Aquinas College (3-0), American International College (5-3), Saint Michael's College (2-1), D'Youville College (4-3, 8 Inn.), Post University (5-3), Salem University (6-5) and Alliance University (13-2, 5 Inn.).

HARD HITTING HURD
Hurd in her sophomore season has shown her strength from the batter's box as she enters the week ranked first in the PSAC in doubles (10), second in RBI (25) and seventh in batting average (.466). On the season Hurd has already belted 10 doubles and two home runs while slugging an impressive .741.
 
A starter of all 18 games this season, Hurd has had only four contest this season where she was unable to register at least one hit. Additionally, she has had 10 multi-hit performances.
 
Hurd posted a season-best performance against Alliance that saw her drive in a career-high five RBI while registering a career-best three hits in four at-bats.
 
PRODUCING IN BIG SPOTS
Hurd has not shied away from clutch situations so far this year as she hitting .714 (15-for-21) with runners in scoring position. Freshman Aubrey Mansfield has also produced in key scoring opportunities via a .353 (6-for-17) batting average with runners in scoring position.
 
GRAB A BAG
Arielle Brown continues to showcase her talent for reaching base and in the conference, she is first in walks (13), tied for fourth in runs scored (20) and eighth in stolen bases (9). As SRU's trusted leadoff hitter, Brown has reached base in 16 of 18 games.  
 
THE REST OF THE ROCK OFFENSE
Brown (.278), Cami Fisk (.293), Erin Gardner (.261) and Aubrey Mansfield (.250) round out Slippery Rock's attack that is currently batting at least .250 over 16 or more appearances this year.
 
Through 18 starts at first base, Fisk is hitting .293 with seven runs, one home run and 12 RBI. She ranks second on the team in batting average, slugging percentage (.414), total hits (17), RBI, doubles (4) and home runs.
 
Brown has scored a team-high 20 runs to go along with five RBI, three doubles and a .435 on base percentage.
 
Gardner enters the week with eight runs scored and three RBI while Mansfield rounds out the leaders having scored seven runs while driving in eight and belting three doubles.
 
HEAT CHECK
A vital key to Slippery Rock's early success has been the production from starting pitcher Anderson who carries a 7-1 record into Tuesday's contest. In nine starts this season Anderson has earned one complete game victory while pitching a rotation-high 49 innings.
 
Anderson has a 2.14 ERA and is third in the PSAC in strikeouts (57) and fifth in opponent batting average (.203).
 
SHARMAN THE SAVE SPECIALIST
In nine appearances this season, Chloe Sharman has tallied four saves. For the season, Sharman has made two starts and seven relief appearances while holding a 3.89 ERA in addition to striking out 12 batters over 18 innings of work.
 
Sharman is the program record holder in both career saves (8) and total pitching appearances (90).
 
BRING EM HOME
In crunch time situations this season, four Rock players have had success securing a hit with the bases loaded in Hurd, Fisk, Mackenzie Freeman and Julia Nutter.
