GENEVA, Ohio –
Bryan Dworek broke the second-oldest men's indoor track and field record at Slippery Rock University to lead The Rock men to a total of five NCAA provisional qualifying marks, 22 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and 18 top-10 finishes at the SPIRE Collegiate Indoor Games Saturday at the SPIRE Institute.
Â
Athletes from more than 40 colleges and teams were in action Saturday, including teams representing all three NCAA divisions.
Â
Dworek headlined what was easily the best showing by the SRU team all season when he won the long jump on his sixth and final attempt with a career-best and NCAA provisional leap of 7.44 meters. That jump broke the former SRU record of 7.38 meters that was set by Jeff McBride in 1989. It was the second-oldest men's indoor record at SRU, behind only the 1980 high jump record (2.09m) set by Mike Phipps. Dworek's jump moved him from 21st on the Division II leaderboard this year all the way up to 11th.
Â
That showing in the long jump was just the beginning as The Rock would add four more NCAA provisional marks on the day, including two career-best efforts.
Â
That high jump record mentioned above almost went down Saturday as well after
AJ Virata cleared a career-best 2.07 meters to place second overall. He was joined in hitting the PSAC standard in the event by
Robert Kozares, who was 10th with a mark of 1.89 meters.
Â
Not to be outdone by the other jumpers, pole vaulter
Dan Hyatt followed that up by clearing another career-best for the second straight week when he took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80 meters, increasing his PSAC lead in the event.
Jakob Graff also hit the PSAC standard in 11th at 4.25 meters.
Â
John Eakin and
Joshua Gose took second and third in the shot put with a pair of NCAA provisional marks that were just below their season-bests. Eakin was second at 16.99 meters and Gose was third at 16.56 meters.
Seaton Wozniak joined them in reaching the PSAC standard in 11th place at 14.85 meters.
Â
Zack Duda led two SRU jumpers to PSAC marks in the triple jump with a fourth place showing and a leap of 13.63 meters.
Ian James was fifth at 13.06 meters to also hit the PSAC standard.
Â
The final PSAC marks in the field events came in the weight throw, where
Joshua VanDeMark was fifth with a toss of 17.78 meters and
Joshua Rohland was 11th with a mark of 14.61 meters.
Â
Virata also hit the PSAC mark in the 200-meter dash with a sixth place finish in 22.13 seconds and ran the anchor leg of the runner-up 4x400-meter relay that posted a season-best time of 3:19.98. He was joined on the relay by
Kadin Johnson,
Tyler Morosky and
Shannon Dooley. Johnson was also fifth in the open 400-meter dash in 49.58 seconds.
Â
Dooley was one of two mid-distance runners to post the highest individual finish on the track Saturday when he took third in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1:54.63.
Devon Navaroli also hit the PSAC mark in 15th at 1:56.54 on the back end of a third place showing in the mile earlier in the day when he clocked a season-best effort of 4:14.30.
Ryan Corbitt gave SRU three PSAC qualifiers in the 800m when he took 18th in a season-best 1:57.13.
Â
Troy Hart led a pair of SRU runners to PSAC marks in the 5,000-meter run with a sixth place finish in 15:07.79.
Tucker Davis followed in 12th in 15:39.17.
Â
The final PSAC marks on the day came in the 60-meter hurdles, where
Matthew Crow was eighth in 8.50 seconds and
Brenden Lewis was 10th in 8.62 seconds.
Â
Slippery Rock will have one final tune-up before the PSAC Championships when it travels to the University of Mount Union next Saturday for the Raider Tune-Up.
