Duda, Speigle lead Rock at multi meet

Zack Duda took second in the heptathlon and Lorna Speigle was third in the pentathlon to lead The Rock at the Mike Kowal Multi Meet at Edinboro.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's and women's track & field team had 10 athletes compete at the Mike Kowal Multi Meet at Edinboro this weekend to close out the first week of competition in the 2023-24 indoor season.
 
The Rock picked up top three finishes in both the women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon with Zack Duda leading the way with a runner-up finish in the heptathlon and Lorna Speigle placing third in the pentathlon.
 
Duda took second in the field of 11 total athletes, nine of which finished all seven events of the heptathlon. He tallied a final score of 4,591 points which included hitting the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying mark in the high jump with a clearance of 1.88 meters.
 
Gavin Thomas was fifth with 4,221 points, followed by Kyle Adams in sixth with 4,178 points and Ethan Folmer in seventh with 4,001 points. Jack Keenan started the competition Saturday, but did not complete all the events.
 
 Speigle led The Rock women with a third place showing in the pentathlon with 2,992 points in a field of 12 women that completed all five events.
 
Maddy Miller was fourth with 2,979 points, followed by Lydia Latimer in seventh with 2,909 points, Leighanne Swan in eighth with 2,852 points and Alison Lamoreaux in 10th with 2,545 points. Latimer also hit the PSAC qualifying standard in the high jump with a clearance of 1.55 meters.
 
The rest of The Rock track & field teams competed Friday at Youngstown State in the season opener, where they combined for 26 PSAC qualifying marks, four NCAA provisional marks and one school record with Samantha Gilbert breaking the 60-meter record.
 
Slippery Rock will now break for finals and the holidays before returning to action Jan. 13 at Kent State University.
