YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Slippery Rock University men's track & field team recorded 13 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference qualifying marks and one NCAA provisional mark in the 2023-24 indoor season opener Friday at Youngstown State University's Icebreaker meet.

The highlight of the meet for SRU came early in the day when Dan Hyatt recorded an NCAA provisional mark in the pole vault.

Hyatt kicked things off with a career-best in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.95 meters to place third in the seeded section of the competition. He was beaten only by a pair of Division I jumpers from Youngstown State. Freshman Bradon Schneider also hit the PSAC automatic standard in the competition with a seventh place finish and a clearance of 4.75 meters, just shy of the Division II provisional qualifying standard of 4.76 meters.

AJ Virata led The Rock on the track Friday with a trio of top 10 finishes and a pair of individual PSAC qualifying marks. He posted a career-best time of 6.90 seconds to place eighth in the 60-meter dash and took third in the 200-meter dash in 21.70 seconds, just shy of his own SRU record of 21.44 seconds. He then closed out his day by running a leg of the seventh place 4x400-meter relay, where he teamed with Matthew Crow, Jacob Thompson and Kyle Rauchut to run a time of 3:22.73.

Thompson opened his SRU career by hitting the PSAC standard in the 400-meter dash with a 25th place showing in 50.34 seconds to round out the top efforts of the sprinters. Crow led the way in the 60-meter hurdles with a 13th place finish with a PSAC mark of 8.32 seconds.

The rest of the PSAC qualifying marks came in the field.

Seaton Wozniak matched Hyatt and Virata for the highest individual finish of the day with a third place showing in the shot put with a toss of 15.59 meters. He was beaten only by a pair of Division I throwers from YSU. Joshua Gose also tallied a PSAC mark in 15th place with a throw of 14.31 meters.

The Rock tallied three top 10 finishes in the horizontal jumps, led by Bryan Dworek placing fifth in the long jump with a leap of 7.05 meters. Taye Lynch and Ian James took sixth and seventh in the triple jump with Lynch leaping 14.00 meters and James landing a jump of 13.75 meters.

The final PSAC qualifying marks came in the weight throw, where Joshua Rohland and Zach Gose took 10th and 11th overall. Rohland recorded a throw of 14.82 meters, while Gose landed a throw of 14.72 meters.

Friday's meet marked the first of two competitions for SRU this weekend as The Rock will send five multi-event athletes to Edinboro Saturday and Sunday for the Mike Kowal Multi Meet. Results from that meet will be posted Sunday at the conclusion of the two-day multi event. The rest of The Rock team will now take a break for finals and the holidays before returning to action Jan. 13 at Kent State University.
