PSAC Tournament Preview: Slippery Rock at Gannon

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team will compete in its 13th consecutive PSAC Tournament when it travels to Gannon in a first round matchup 4 p.m. Monday.

TICKET INFORMATION
Tickets are required to attend the PSAC Tournament and must be purchased through TicketLeap. Cash and credit/debit cards will not be accepted at the McConnell Family Stadium entrance for admission. Tickets must be purchased in advance at THIS LINK.
 
The price is $10 for adults and seniors, and $5 for non-PSAC students, including K-12. Students with an ID from a PSAC school are free. Children under the age of two will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
 
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team will compete in its 13th consecutive Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament when it travels to Gannon University in a first round matchup 4 p.m. Monday.
 
With the third seed in the PSAC West, The Rock enter on a nine game unbeaten streak, their longest since 2009. Overall, The Rock come in with a 12-3-3 record overall and an 11-2-3 mark in the PSAC West. The second-seeded Golden Knights ride a 13-3-2 overall record, going 13-2-1 in conference.

SERIES HISTORY vs. GANNON
Monday marks the 33rd all-time meeting between The Rock and the Golden Knights, a series that Slippery Rock holds a 14-15-3 record in. Slippery Rock has gone 0-3-3 in its last six contests with Gannon, last winning Oct. 6, 2021.
 
While on the road, The Rock is 5-9-2 against the Golden Knights, going 0-3-1 in their last four road trips. Slippery Rock's last win at Gannon came Oct. 9, 2019 in a 1-0 decision.
 
Slippery Rock and Gannon have met twice before in the PSAC Tournament, both coming in the quarterfinal stage. The Rock fell to the Golden Knights, 1-0, in 2013, and 5-3, in 2021.

LAST MEETING
Slippery Rock wrapped up its regular season by hosting Gannon last week at James Egli Field, fighting back from a three-goal deficit to draw the match, 3-3. After Gannon boasted a 3-0 lead at halftime following goals in the sixth, 37th and 41st minutes of play, The Rock was propelled by Ashley Rea's three second-half goals.
 
Rea tallied goals in the 54th and 62nd minutes, converting on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to seal the deal. SRU led in shots (17-10) and shots on goal (6-5). Gannon wound up with a 4-1 tilt in corner kicks.
 
Rea's hat trick was the first three-goal performance for a Slippery Rock athlete since Nov. 9, 2019, when Kaitlyn Barackman earned a hat trick against Gannon.

WHERE THEY STAND
Slippery Rock enters the PSAC Tournament as the third seed in the PSAC West, while Gannon claimed the second seed. The winner of Monday's first-round match will advance to the semifinal round of the PSAC Tournament, which will be hosted by the highest-remaining seed in the PSAC East.

THE ROCK HASN'T LOST SINCE SEPT. 27
Slippery Rock's 3-3 draw last week extended The Rock's unbeaten streak to nine games, the team's longest undefeated streak since 2009. Between the 2010-11 seasons, Slippery Rock rattled off an undefeated stretch of 16 games.

A MONUMENTAL YEAR AT HOME
With SRU's 3-3 comeback draw against Gannon last week, Slippery Rock finished the year off with a home record of 7-0-2. The record marks the 27th season that SRU has posted a record of .500 or greater at home. It is also Slippery Rock's first undefeated season while at home since 2007, a year in which The Rock went 12-0 at home, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

LEADING THE CHARGE
Sydney Patrick leads Slippery Rock with 23 points on six goals and a team-high 11 assists, while Morgan Sarver has totaled 21 points on six goals and nine assists. Patrick and Sarver rank ninth and 19th in Division II in assists, respectively.
 
Following her hat trick against Gannon, Rea has become the team's leading goalscorer, tallying 19 points on eight goals and three assists. Maddie DeLucio also finds herself with double-digits in points, having netted 12 points on five goals and a pair of assists.
 
Skylar Munnikhuysen carries eight points on three goals and two assists, while Libby Zacharyasz also finds herself with eight points, all coming from her four goals. Fellow defenders Brooke Riefenstahl and Faith Diffenbacher both have five points on two goals and one assist.
 
Olivia Yoder has four points on one goal and two assists, while Jaime Dermotta's goal and assist grant her three points. Sophia Palermo, Briona Rice and Lindsey Price each have two points on one goal, while Nina King and Bailey McGee have each earned one point on one assist.

SPENDING THE YEAR ON THE ATTACK
Slippery Rock averaged 18.5 shots per game in the regular season, second in the PSAC to Gannon's 22.5 and 16th in Division II. Sarver, who has led the team with 67 total shots, ranks 15th nationally with 3.94 shots per game. Sarver has also taken a team-high 31 shots on goal.
 
Rea's seven-shot performance against the Golden Knights last week bump her up to second on the team in shots, placing 24 of her 41 total shots on target. Both DeLucio and Patrick have landed 18 of their 35 shots on net, while Munnikhuysen has planted 15 of her 32 total shots on frame.
 
Zacharyasz has put 16 of her 27 shots on goal, able to boast a .593 shot on goal percentage as one of the team's most accurate shot-takers.
 
SLIPPERY ROCK IN THE PSAC TOURNAMENT
Monday will mark Slippery Rock's 32nd game in the PSAC Tournament, coming in with a 16-4-1 record all-time. The Rock is 0-2 in its last two seasons in the PSAC Tournament, but went 3-0 in 2019 en route to a 2-1 Championship win over Edinboro.
 
Slippery Rock has won the PSAC Tournament Championship four times: 2003, 2005, 2012 and 2019.
 
RECORD WATCH
  • With Patrick's assist against Gannon, she moves into second all-time with 11 assists in a single season. Annette Berg tallied 15 assists in 1999.
     
  • Patrick also improved to 21 career assists, which ranks her seventh all-time in SRU history. 22 assists would put Patrick in a tie for fifth, while Ashley Paganie leads with 26.
     
  • Patrick's 21st assist in her 57th game also tied her with Rachel Edge for .37 assists per game, which ranks first in Slippery Rock history.
     
  • At 67 total shots, Sarver is tied for ninth all-time for most shots in a single season. Paganie holds the record with 80 shots in the 2009 season. Paganie also holds the record for shots per game at 4.44. Sarver enters Tuesday's contest having taken 3.94.
     
  • Rea has taken 138 total shots in her career, which ranks her ninth all-time. Last year, Kayla Swope concluded her career with 148 shots, which ranks one spot ahead in eighth.
A PREPARED DEFENSE
Led by Diffenbacher, King, Riefenstahl and Zacharyasz, none of whom have missed a minute of play this season, Slippery Rock's defense has continued to play a major role in SRU extending its undefeated streak to nine games.
 
In their last nine games, The Rock have limited their opponents to as many or fewer than SRU's output. In the last six matches, Slippery Rock holds an advantage in shots on goal, 45-21. In the same span, The Rock have built up a lead in corner kicks, 33-13.
 
TENDING THE NET
Leah Allman gets set to make her 19th consecutive start in net for The Rock, bringing a GAA of 1.37 and a save percentage of .647. In her freshman campaign, Allman has made 44 saves while facing 143 shots. She has also recorded six shutouts.

GANNON SCOUTING REPORT
After Gannon was handed just its fifth non-winning result last week in the 3-3 draw at Slippery Rock, the Golden Knights enter Monday's PSAC Tournament showdown having gone 3-1-1 in their last five games. Gannon finished the year strong, blanking Indiana University (Pa.) in a 5-0 shutout last Friday.
 
 As a collective unit, Gannon is able to utilize one of the most dynamic offenses in Division II, outscoring its opponents 54-25 on the season. Gannon is led by true freshman Brooklyn Respecki, who has amassed 35 points on 11 goals and 13 assists. Respecki also finds herself just five shots away from 100, placing 50 of her 95 total shots on target.
 
Grace Emanuel, who has netted four goals against The Rock this season, has collected 26 points from 11 goals and four assists. The Golden Knights also have a weapon in Gabby Boden, second on the team in assists, bringing 18 points on five goals and eight assists.
 
Six Gannon athletes have scored three or more goals this season, while seven have contributed at least 10 points on the year.
 
The Golden Knights, who are seeking their first program PSAC Tournament Championship, hosted the 2022 title game, falling to West Chester University, 3-0. Gannon has not lost a PSAC quarterfinal match since 2014.

A victory against Gannon would advance Slippery Rock to the second round of the PSAC Tournament, which would take place Friday, hosted by the highest remaining seed in the PSAC East.
