Rock women's XC wins at Edinboro

Slippery Rock took down the No. 1 ranked team in the Atlantic Region by four points to win the Doug Watts Open Saturday at Edinboro.

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's cross country team upset the No. 1 ranked team in the Atlantic Region and won the Doug Watts Open Saturday at Edinboro University.
 
The Rock used a strong pack with all five scorers in the top nine places to post a score of 31 points, edging defending regional champion and the region's current No. 1 ranked team Edinboro by four points. The hosts took second with 35 points, while Lake Erie was a distant third with 64 points.
 
Marianne Abdalah (pictured above, photo courtesy of Matt Durisko) led the way with a second place finish after covering the 6,000-meter course in 22:33, finishing just five seconds shy of Edinboro standout Kylie Anicic in what was an early season showdown between two women projected to be among the best in the region this fall.
 
Madison Murtland was the second SRU finisher in fifth place in 23:54. Katie Plassio followed in seventh in 24:29, while Anna Igims was eighth in 24:35 and Steph Keelon was ninth in 24:58 to cap the scorers.
 
Freshman Jennifer Cichra was the sixth SRU finisher in 10th place in 25:13 and Chelsea Hunt rounded out the top seven in 13th place in 25:41.
 
A total of 19 women from three complete teams finished the race.
 
Slippery Rock will take next weekend off before returning to action Sept. 17 at the Allegheny Classic hosted by Allegheny College.
