MEADVILLE, Pa. – Despite resting three of its top runners, the Slippery Rock University women's cross country team earned a victory at the Allegheny Classic hosted by Allegheny College Saturday.

Slippery Rock rested its top two runners in
Marianne Abdalah and
Madison Murtland and also rested scorer
Anna Igims, but The Rock was still able to secure a narrow win in the team standings thanks to some key performances from a trio of freshmen.

The Rock won the team competition with 31 points, narrowly edging hosting Allegheny by three points as the Gators took second with 34 points. Indiana (Pa.) was a distant third with 93 points, followed by Grove City with 102 points and Chatham with 129 points. A total of seven teams and 78 runners competed in the event.

Slippery Rock was led by a pair of freshmen with
Ruthie Hughes taking the individual win for her first collegiate victory and
Jennifer Cichra placing third overall. Hughes covered the 3-mile course in 18:59, while Cichra finished 10 seconds back in 19:09.

Katie Plassio was sixth in 19:26,
Steph Keelon was seventh in 19:30 and freshman
Skye Hackathorn capped the scorers in 14th place in 20:14.

Chelsea Hunt was 20th in 20:24 and
Maddie Grillo was 21st in 20:33 as SRU put all of its top seven runners inside the top 21.

Slippery Rock will compete next Saturday for the second week in a row when it travels to Lock Haven University for the LHU Invitational.
