Rock ready for PSAC West match at California

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team ends a two-game road trip with a PSAC West match 6 p.m. Wednesday against California (Pa.) at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team ends a two-game road trip with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division match 6 p.m. Wednesday against California (Pa.) at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

SERIES HISTORY vs CALIFORNIA
Slippery Rock holds a sizable 29-10-2 all-time record over the Vulcans dating back to 1993. SRU is 15-4-2 when traveling to California, Pennsylvania and has won 12 of the last 13 matches between the two teams. A win Wednesday would extend The Rock's current winning streak against Cal to eight.
 
LAST MEETING
SRU defeated the Vulcans 5-1, on Oct. 27, 2021, in its last home game of the 2021 season to clinch a spot in the PSAC Tournament. The Rock's offensive onslaught was led by Jordyn Minda who tallied five points on two goals and an assist.
 
Rachel Edge, Sydney Patrick and Ashley Rea netted one goal apiece while Maddie DeLucio, Georgia Nagucki and Megan Sikora each dished out an assist. Emma Yoder made one save while allowing just one goal over 90 minutes.

SCOUTING THE ROCK
LAST TIME OUT
Slippery Rock played Mercyhurst University to a 1-1 tie on the road in Erie, Pennsylvania. Faith Diffenbacher recorded SRU's lone goal on a corner kick from Patrick. Yoder made a season-high seven saves while allowing just one goal.
 
ROAD WARRIORS
Since Jessica Giegucz's inaugural season, SRU has compiled a 32-16-7 (.581) record in PSAC matches played on the road. In those 55 contests, Slippery Rock has outscored its opponents by an impressive +45 margin (101-56) while recording 20 shutout victories and 36 contests holding its competitors to no more than one goal.
 
A LOOK AT THE OFFENSE
Leading the SRU offensive attack is Swope with three points on one goal and one assist. Following are four players who have also netted a goal this year in Rea, Diffenbacher, Jaime Dermotta and Brooke Riefenstahl.
 
Rounding out the offense is Patrick with two assists as well as Kylee Kosek and Julia Mascaro with one assist each.
 
DEFENSIVE STAND
The Slippery Rock backline has proven itself through six contests, allowing just five total goals and just one overall in the second half of play this season.
 
Leading the SRU defense is Yoder, the reigning PSAC West Defensive Athlete of the Week, with a 0.83 goals against average, .833 save percentage and 25 saves.
 
PROGRAM HISTORY UPDATES
For her career, Yoder ranks third in program history in goalie wins (33), starts by a goalie (51), shutouts (21) and saves (201). Yoder currently ranks eighth in Rock women's soccer program history in consecutive games started and with 12 regular season games remaining, she is on pace to rank fourth.
 
With her assist at Mercyhurst, Swope currently ranks tied for 12th in career assists and is just two away from advancing past Danielle Cooper (2005-07) for 11th.
 
TYING KNOTS
Slippery Rock has had five total seasons in program history that it ended the year with three or more tied contests. Its largest number of contests that ended in draws occurred during the 2010 season when it concluded the season with five. So far this year, The Rock has had for contests end in a tie.
 
On the national stage, Slippery Rock is tied for first in all of Division II in ties along with Southwest Minnesota State while ranking sixth in the entire NCAA regardless of division.

The Rock has done an excellent job at getting offensive looks as it has prompted 43 corners on the season while its opponents have had just 23.

SCOUTING THE VULCANS
Last time out: California suffered a 2-0 divisional loss to Pitt-Johnstown on the road. Cal's other PSAC West games so far this season have included a tie against Indiana University (Pa.) and a victory over Clarion.
 
Leading the way for the Vulcan offense is Julia Cruz and Elisabeth Engle who have each tallied one goal so far this season. Adriana Marina rounds out the California offensive leaders with one assist.
 
Starting Vulcan goalkeeper Emily Ouimet ranks second in the PSAC in GAA (0.67), save percentage (.882) and saves (15).
 
In SRU and Cal's most recent meeting a season ago, Engle dished out the Vulcans lone assist of the game while Ouimet made six saves while allowing four goals over 45 minutes.
