BREMEN, Germany – Former Slippery Rock University women's soccer standout and current Philippine Women's National Team member Sofia Harrison has signed a professional contract with SV Werder Bremen of the Women's Bundesliga, the top tier of professional women's soccer in Germany.
Â
Harrison graduated from Slippery Rock in 2021 with a degree in exercise science. She started every game on defense at The Rock during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons, playing in 56 straight games and helping SRU to the 2019 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title. Harrison tallied a career-high seven goals and 16 points from her defensive position during the 2019 season.
Â
Joining a professional club at the top level of German soccer is the latest in a series of impressive accomplishments for Harrison since she graduated from SRU. Earlier this year, she started on defense for the Philippine Women's National Team and helped the squad qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time. She then helped the "Filipinas" win their first-ever title at this summer's ASEAN Football Federation Women's Championship.
Â
"This is tremendous news for Sofia and we couldn't be more proud of all that she continues to accomplish," said SRU head women's soccer coach
Jessica Giegucz. "She's going to get the chance to play in one of the best women's soccer leagues in Europe and hopefully be able to carry that momentum into being on the field at the World Cup next year. We're just so proud of her."
Â
The 23-year-old Harrison first made her National Team appearance with the Philippine team in 2018. Since then, she has moved into a starting role as a left back with the club and will now have her first chance to play professionally on the club level. Â
Â
"Having the opportunity to play in the Women's Bundesliga is a big step for me," said Harrison. "I hope that I can use my skills to help the team achieve our goals."
Â
SV Werder Bremen plays in the city of Bremen in northern Germany and competes in the Frauen-Bundesliga with 11 other clubs, including FC Bayern Munich and 2021-22 champion VfL Wolfsburg. The team is scheduled to open the 2022-23 Bundesliga season Sept. 18.
Â
Harrison becomes the second former Slippery Rock women's soccer player currently playing for a top tier club in Europe, joining Danielle Turner, who currently plays back for Aston Villa in the Women's Super League in England.
